    Default Fixed Base Router

I've got a Festool plunge router which is a great - but I'm looking for a fixed base router for use with a dovetail jig. The fixed base models seem plentiful in the US, but scare here in Australia. Does anyone have a recommendation on brand/model for a fixed base router?

    Thanks

Makita 3601B, a bit pricey but a great router.

    Hi

Australia like most parts of the world is a plunge router dominated marketplace. Makita's unit is a very old model and is fixed speed (not a problem for a dovetail jig). The cost of certification of a US router to our regulations, coupled with our small market size and different voltage makes the economics of importing from the US impossible.

I can't think of a dovetail jig that specifically requires a FB router. I'd be looking at the plunge router options.

    I hope that this helps.

    Regards

This thread has got me thinking. I do not have a fixed base router and am now wondering am I missing out on something. What are the advantages and how do they differ from say, a Triton fixed in position?

Incidentally, I have heard lots of good reports about the Makita 3601B.

Default For table use they're great....

    Hi

The main advantage the FB router has that it's usually got a cylindrical motor so mounting it in the wide range router lifts available in the US is easy, also as the motor is clamped into the lift it can be positioned to allow above the table bit changing.

All great concepts, but unless we can get a variable speed FB router we're doomed to plunge routers forever.

Unfortunately power tool suppliers in Australia don't realise the true versatility of a table mounted router.

    Regards

    Grahame
