    Default Gifkin Jig

I'd like to start by saying the Gifkin Jig is terrific and the service from Roger is excellent. The jig turns out spectacularly accurate joints even for a novice like me.
I recently bought the ally body version with both B10 and A10 templates, the A10 I mastered staight out of the box, however the B10 requires a full shim stack + a bit to get enough clearance in the joint.
Spoke to Roger and he kindly sent me a replacement template to try and while it was a slight improvement still needs all shims to the point where the backing board almost touches the stop. Measured cutters and bearings both spot on. As per intructions I run all the cuts 2-3 times and make sure I get good pressue against the bearing. Roger has since tested a template from the batch and all OK as you would expect with CNC.
Anyone got any ideas what I'm doing wrong or is this pretty normal and nothing to worry about.

    Cheers
    Mike

Doesn't sound right and I would have suspected the cutter but you say that's OK.

Is the bearing on the cutter the problem ? Have you checked that too ?

Yep bearing is spot on, it's got Roger a bit baffled he's away at the moment doing a show. Thought I'd save him some time and ask the question.

If I rememeber correctly I did the same thing, found I couldnt add enough shims etc, and then found I was using the wrong cutter. Not an inaccurate cutter but the wrong one.

Best I can do as you see the joint is OK on the test piece. Double checked cutter is the correct 1 for template.

Are you using one router or two , one for each cutter, that is do you have a dedicated router table for the jig. Are the bits set at the same height , ie top of bearing to the table or the top of the bit to the table, is the bearing on the bits running below the top of the template and if so by how much, however much it is both bits should be the same.

Ah good point, I am using a GMC in a triton table and was looking at the mounting of same. Router appears to have a slight angle which may be throwing the dovetail cutter off slightly. Not sure what you mean about cutter height as I thought if bearing is running anywhere in template height of cutter dosn't matter. Will look sumore

Cutter height doesnt alter the fit. It's the shims which do that. Cutter height matches the thickness of the timber and determines whether you get a slight protrusion of pins on the joint, which is preferable.
