Gifkins Jig Pins
I have had a Gifkins Jig for quite a while, but I'd never used the H10 template, The one that does the thinner timbers from 10mm down to 2mm.
Recently SWMBO ordered a box for her sun glasses, dimensions around 500mm* 300mm-ish *100mm with a see through panel in the lid. She has a lot of sunglasses.
I decided to make use of some quarter sawn ash, recycled from the children's shoe shop floor in the Belconnen Mall. It was 16mm flooring so I re-sawed it then thicknessed it down to 5mm and made a couple of test pieces to set up the Gifkins Jig, as I'd only used it with the A-size template. The reason for going so thin on the box walls is to reduce weight. I will use cedar for the cope&style lid frame and the thinnest polycarbonate I have on hand. Ill use a 5mm x 6mm strip of ash glued to the base of the walls as a support for the bottom, and I plan to glue a 8 to 10mm square white cedar bar to the top of the inner rear wall, to give me somewhere to mortise in the hinges.
Anyway I cut the tails, then I cut the pins and went for test fit to see how many shims to lose (I was running 7 with the A-size template). Very loose result, so I lost 4 shims and re-cut.. Still very loose, so I lost all the remaining shims and re-cut the pins... Still very loose.
This is all a bit puzzling. We have 7 Grifkins jigs at the WCG-ACT and I have not struck this problem. So I have put the router table in the naughty corner while I think about it
2 Potential solutions come to mind.
Solution #1 is put the calipers over the 2x spare backer boards which came with the kit to see if they are a different thickness to the ones which were delivered. I estimate I will need to lose about 5 shims in thickness from the backer
Solution #2 it to thickness about 10 shims off the backer, then re-pack it back with some shims till I get a good fit.
Solution #3 would be to simply take the whole lot down to the WCG shed and use their Jig and their cutters I suppose (but that doesn't solve the mystery, and I'd really like to make a few sliding trays at home, where I get far fewer interruptions)
Has anyone on this forum struck this problem, or got any advice? Have I missed something super obvious?
add: I went out and ran the calipers over the 4 backer boards. They are all 12mm, so solution #1 is a bust
I re-cut the tails, just to eliminate something screwy there... same result, pins way too looseLast edited by T91; 14th June 2020 at 09:09 PM. Reason: extra info

Solution # 4 Check that you have the correct cutters for the H10 template as follows -
I don't know if it is possible to use the wrong cutter with the templates, but worthwhile checking.

Yep
I used the right cutters and the magic answer was 8 shims for a snug fit.
I think the earlier post proves you cant get away with the wrong cutter... That would be why they supply a different sized cutter with a different name, but the wrong cutter still _looks_ right when its the only one you are used to using

Have you asked Col Hosie at Gifkins? He is always willing to talk on the phone.
