    Default what handheld router....

    Hi all,

It has been asked probably many times in the past but since the tools evolve rapidly, previous answers might not be relevant anymore.
Anyway, I am after a new router for handheld use only.
I already have a triton (the big one) which is permanently mounted in a table and I find it to heavy for handheld usage.
Also the depth adjustment is not good enough to my taste (the thumbwheels always move up/down because of the vibrations hence you can not repeat the same cut with the same depth).

I would like your opinions on the following brands (and model if you have any in mind):
    - dewalt
    - makita
    - festool (I know that most of them will probably recommend festool )
    - eventually hitachi

I am after one router where I can use bush guide. However from what I read on carbatec website, to use the bush guide you need a router with a plate of a certain size (not sure if the size they are talking about is a standard size or not)
    Thanks again
    Eric

    Default Which handheld router?

I've got both the big and little Triton's, which in my view are best suited to table use. For handheld operations I use a Makita 3612. I purchased the Makita after the little Triton packed up. I find the Makita an easy to use machine and the adjustability is fine for what I do. For any routing work requiring a high degree of accuracy, I try and do this at the table. I recently purchased a Uni Lift and Wixey digital readout from Woodworking supplies and to say it's improved my end products is an understatement. Getting back to the Makita, mine doesn't have the bells and whistles of soft start or variable speed, but it works well with the smaller bits you'd typically use handheld.

    Cheers,

    Reggie
