Default Problems with height adjustment on Triton tra-001?

Hi all. Recently purchased another (used) router table with a mounted Triton router like my existing one (which works great). The problem is that the height adjuster (either top-adjust or spinning the knob on the bottom) is super hard to move - jerky and noisy. I took off the screw-holder cap and the depth lock, and blew some dust out, and it might have improved a little, but it's still really bad. I contacted the seller, but he said it was always like that, and is pretty new. My older one is like butter. Problem seems to be something to do with the screw-lift assembly. Anyone know anything about how to service/investigate this?

I could probably return it to the seller (he's not trying to rip me off - just didn't know it's supposed to work better than that!), but it's a 2 hour round trip - that I probably shouldn't be making in #lockdown, and seller is moving out of state.

(And before you ask, yes I've released the depth lock! The router goes up and down OK if I pull the clutch in on the right hand handle. The spring is removed, as required for table install)

This looks very helpful. Dismantling the Triton TRA001 3¼HP Router Does anyone have direct experience? Such a hassle on a new (to me) purchase

There are so many stories about problems with Triton routers I can't understand why anyone would buy a used one, likely just buying somebody else's problems. Weren't you just talking these things up in another thread? Doesn't help, I know, but if you already had one that was ok you've already exhausted your luck.

True. I kindof bought the table and fence/adjustment system, which came with the router. But my other one is excellent! Might just return the router itself if I can’t fix it.

Without pulling it apart it is very difficult to determine where the problem is and trying to advise a fix through this medium is only guesswork.
If you can dismantle it as per the link in your earlier post it should be pretty easy to see where the problem is. The wormshaft only engages with another metal gear that is part of the rack and pinion winder. As you say the rise and fall works okay and it's just the fine adjustment that is a problem so I would suspect that the problem is in the worm assembly. When you removed the black knob that you turn for the fine adjustment, was the shaft it is attached to nylon or metal? In your link there is another hyperlink taking you to the replacement metal worm should you need one to fix the router.

I took it apart this morning, cleaned the gears and lubed. The worm is metal. I put it back together, and it seemed a bit better, but I haven't put it back in the table yet - one of the plate mounting screws was stripped, so took some persuading to get out (hammering an old torq bit into the head), so will need to replace. Looks like it's imperial size - 1/4" UNC, my shop is all metric.

Yes they are 1/4". You could use BSW if you have trouble getting the UNC as they are the same pitch, just slightly different angle on the flanks and for what it has to do will be fine. I tried one in my MOF001 today and it fits okay.

Put it back together with 3 screws and it’s all good now. IMG 1491 - YouTube

Good to see you've sorted it, but you posted the wrong video - not the after servicing one.

Now that looks better. Do you have any idea what the problem might have been?

I think the main problem was accumulation of fine dust caked solid on the end of the worm gear, and the worm wheel it turns. Gentle application of a wire brush, and a generous application of silicon spray was all that was required. The guide from Ray Girling was spot on!
