Default Help needed for Triton TRA001 router

    Hi All,
I am thinking about buying a Triton TRA001 as I am planning to use it on the router table. However, from the reviews I have read off the internet, it seems this router has some durability problem and has some cheap parts. As I am a hobby woodworker from Malaysia, I really appreciate if anyone would be able to help me with the questions below before I buy it. Repair will be very costly if not impossible and I am hoping that if I buy this unit it would serve me for many years to come. I am planning to buy this router from “Justtools” from Australia as they offer a better price than Carbatec.
    1. I have read that plastic worm gear was used and it fails very quickly, is plastic worm gear still being used in this machine?
    2. Although this particular router was designed to have better dust collection but the connection port at the base is of an uncommon size and most vacuum hoses would not fit. This is from the many reviews I have read, but is it true?
    3. Is the machine ruggedly built/durable? A recent video review by “Toolselect” in the America suggested that this machine has lots of plastic and rubber and doesn’t look like it’s going to last a long time. Many of you may have used/owned this router for many years so your advice would be much appreciated.
    4. If the machine ever breaks down, is fixing/repairing it by myself possible? As sending it down under and back to Malaysia would cost a small fortune.
If anyone has any comments regarding this router, please feel free to post as the more info I can get about this router, the better decision i may make as the purchase will not be cheap. Thanks very much!

    G'day Chee,

I have had one for about 7 years & I have never had a problem with mine.

I believe the original Triton Company has been sold since I bought mine, so I could not say if they are still made the same or not.

The fact remains, that 97% of all statistics are made up, yet 87% of the population think they are real.

    Hi Steve,

    Thanks for your reply.
It is true since being taken over Triton router has received some poor reviews. However, being in Malaysia where the main brands are bosch and makita and some cheap chinese brands, it is very difficult for me to decide whether it is worth the hassle and money importing the router. As mentioned in my previous post, repair would be expensive and if the machine breaks down frequently it would not be fun.
thanks very much again for your reply and i will wait and think through this before buying it. of course if anyone has recently purchased the machines i would appreciate their opinions very much.

    Hi Chee,

I have purchased both the TRA001 which is mounted in my router table and also the MOF001 for hand held use. I havent had them as long as others probably have but mine are the recent models and are an absolute work horse. I rate them highly so im completely happy with mine. That said you have already taken into account the shipping and warranty IF it did die where as i dont need to pay attention to that as much. I would recommend the router though and would suspect the likely hood of it dying very low if you use it as its intended and take care of it. I would imagine you would get quiet a few years of use out of it and be worth the money

    Cheers,
    Nathan

I believe they have replaced the plastic worm gear.

I have only heard good things about the triton router from people I know who have them.

Note that it is important to remove the spring before using the TRA001 upside down in a router table. Otherwise you risk damaging the mechanism.

Does the TRA001 experience any of the same speed control problems that the MOF001 sometimes have.

A number of owners have complained about the router losing control of the speed. I am one of those.
What happens is you set the router on a reduced speed, and while performing a cut (can happen while under no load also), the router will suddenly go to full speed. Sometimes it will return to normal speed again, and other times you need to turn it off to make it reset. Unfortunately I had not used mine much during the warrantee period and it started to play up after only a small amount of use outside that time.
I have spoken to Kinchrome reps about this and they deny there is any problem. I am sure there are many more out there.
I don't know if the new model has the same problem.

now i think i should put the purchase on hold. because if the machine will need repair often or doesn't perform as expected then it will make all the extra cost of shipping charges and duties not justifiable. thanks for you input!

Okay I should keep an eye out when using the MOF. So far so good. The TRA is faultless I have been using it mounted in the table so much more and think it's great.

Don't get me wrong, I love my Triton MOF. It has some great features, and so far have not had any problems with anything else on it.
I am just annoyed that I only used it a small amount during the warrantee period, and it failed soon after it ran out. I would have been lucky to have done 1 hour of work before it started to play up. I now begrudge having to pay about $80 + postage for a new speed controller, so I just put up with it.
I have not heard whether anyone who has replaced the speed controller has found them successful, or if the problem returned sometime down the track.
