Laminex for Router table/other finish
Hi,
I am going to make up a router table top using 2 pieces of 16mm MDF stuck together.
I have been trying to get hold of some Laminex offcuts (900 x 600) (in Sydney) but have had nil luck.
What other options would anybody suggest? I thought maybe a couple of coats of Gloss oil paint or a clear polyurathane.
Any comments or suggestions , or point me in the right direction to get hold of some Laminex offcuts.
Thanks
Greg

Stick to your guns with the Laminex Greg, it really does make the best top.
It woul be an expensive shame to have to buy a full sheet and cut it up but at least you would have off cutss to flog off.

I agree, hold out for the Laminex.
Not sure where you have been trying for offcuts but my first stop would be a kitchen manufacturing/refurbishing place - if they don't have any they will probably point you in the right direction. Don't expect to get the bits for free, particularly the size you are chasing but they should be able to help you out.
Regards,
Bob

There was a post on the Forums a year or so ago, about a place/web site that would list surplus stock from manufacturers - IIRC they had a LOT of Laminex/Formica offcuts listed with reasonable prices, but you had to register to get any details of where the seller was - could have been next door or at the opposite end of the country.

Thanks for all the advise.I managed to pick up a full sheet at a very reasonable price.
I will have enough to make up the top plus some jigs etc .
I also found the site that sells offcuts its ,
offcuts, surplus materials, building supplies, laminates, stone, fitout, renovation - offcuts.com.au.
I never bothered but it looks like the guy is up round the Hills District in Sydney.
Now to get a start!

I got a damaged 1800 x 900 sheet of lamipanel (thicker than benchtop laminex) from the laminex Industries warehouse in Hobart for 10 bucks. I think they have distributon warehouses in ost states with over the counter sales to the public). Really stiffens up the table tops. My top (which accomodates 2 routers and attached Jessums) is 1200 x 600 x 25 mm thick (19mm mdf sandwiched between 2 x 3mm thick lamipanel sheets. I then routed out the pattern for my Jessum Rout r lift plate. Dead flat and rigid.
If you never made a mistake, you never made anything!
