Default Looking for 63mm router in Australia

    Greetings,

Actually, my problem may be described in two different ways.

I bought a rinky dinky clear bracket + aluminium saddle that's designed to let you route on the narrow edge of a board. (refer pic)

I'd thought that my DeWalt D26204K was the right size, after a very cursory measurement - foolishly concluding there must only be a couple of standard sizes and hastily congratulating the industry on its foresight..

Turns out my D26204K is actually closer to 69mm diameter.

Looking around the domestic (AU) market, it's seemingly impossible to find a basic fixed / trim style router body where the manufacturer advertise (even in their user manual) the diameter.

So, do ~ 63-65mm trim/plunge router bodies exist in Australia? I've reviewed some cheap & cheerfuls via Bunnings and other stores online, but as noted no one specifies body diameters -- I feel I may have to trek into some stores with calipers in hand.

A tangential question - such jigs for ~69mm wide bodies seem to not exist based on my ebay/ali/etc searching - I'd be happy if someone can contradict that! : )

I have a cheap Ryobi Router that I've had for years and it appears that it falls within your size range.

I reckon it was designed for the Chinese copy of the Makita RT0700 router; I did a review on this item HERE. I also have a Ryobi trimmer and the body fits all the bases supplied with the Chinese model; that model is also badge engineered by AEG and Ozito.

So... Makita, Ryobi, Ozito or AEG models should fit. Unfortunately I'm two hours north of my shed so I can't doublecheck for you but hopefully another member can?

    Thanks Treecycle.

I see locally (bunnings) Ryobi has a 400W model at $99 that looks remarkably similar, though the specific EVT400K model seems to not be sold any longer.

Chief Tiff's response & links has sent me down a trimmer-router rabbit hole, but it's good to know there's a relatively easy out here (plus $99 serendipitously aligns with my Christmas-gift voucher!)

    Thanks Chief.

I spent a while trawling through that thread - quite the ride, lots of ups and downs, but sounds like the final conclusion is at ~$90 (eg. Hand Trimmer Router Palm Laminate Compact 710W Kit Plunge &Tilt Base Woodworking | eBay ) along with a new collet, it's probably worth the pot-luck.

I see that Makita's original is currently around $270 - with just the round base - no plunge or circular base - though neither option aligns with my mostly-yellow collection.

The price has come down significantly since I wrote the initial review!

However... caveat emptor. I still wouldn't recommend this item unless you are willing to risk forking out for a genuine Makita collet.

There is a cheaper solution to your problem than buying a router to fit the guide you have. Get a piece of perspex etc bigger than the base on your current router, bore a hole in the centre, and some slots for the guide fixing bolts, then mount the guide pieces to that and fix your router to it. Problem solved.

I presume that you have the original base for the DeWalt trimmer there should be provision for attachments to be screwed on? Like the one in the picture on the nasty plastic base shown (these break quite easily)

    Thanks malb, wood spirit.

I'd originally pondered trying some DIY with this thing, or just replacing almost all of it, but the AU$20 sunk cost .. well, that's not terribly compelling, I concede.

I have a few sheets of thicker perspex, but haven't done any kind of jury rigging like this before, so I'm not sure how that'd go. I'm not opposed to dedicating a cheap-n-cheerful tool to a specific purpose, but OTOH it's rare that I need to recess anything along the narrow edge of something. I think I'll have a watch of some 'how to machine / shape perspex' and then have a go at modifying one of my current routers and/or this little doodad, before throwing money down on an ebay special + OEM collet.
