Makita 3612BR Router
I am after some advice on a 3612BR Makita which a friend has for sale. I think this is an older model dating from the eighties. It is 2300W single speed. It appears to be in good nick. The only fault was a slightly sticky plunge mechanism.
I am interested in this tool for myself as one of my routers recently gave up the ghost, but I would like to offer him a fair price. If forum members price is beyond my budget we may put it up for sale on the forum marketplace. It comes with a straight fence, circle guide with bearing (I haven't seen one of these since my first router, a 2HP Ryobi from 1980), collet spanner, 1/4" & 3/8" reducers and a box of 16 x 1/4" shank router bits about half of which still have their protective coating on them.
What do you think it is worth?

From memory I paid around $320 for mine about 15 yrs ago. Not sure what the equivalent is worth now.
Given I never pay any more than about 2/3 new price for anything 2nd hand, as long as it is in excellent condition, that puts it at about the $210 mark. Obviously condition and age may alter that price, as new might go to $250, anything less that very good and I wouldn't bother.
Not real keen on 1/4 shank bits in a reducer collet in a machine with this much power so they wouldn't be a deal maker for me.
Having said all that, I'm not making an offer, just ruminating on what I would be thinking if I was looking to purchase something like it.

Ebay completed listings is a good guide to what the market is paying.
I only found one, so the age of the router may be a factor in that.
It is here:
MAKITA #3612BR HEAVY DUTY ELECTRIC ROUTER | eBay
This is probably a fair price even in Australian dollars as Hitachis of similar specs sell used for around $100
Hope this helps

Thank you for your comments. This is exactly the info I'm chasing. Geoff Dean I normally only buy 1/2" shank if possible. This will be a second/third string router. It is a little large, but if price is good I will wear that problem.
Scribbly Gum the router on ebay was an American 110V model and we all know how much cheaper their equivalent machines are compared to Oz. So for the moment that would probably put the price $100 to $250 in as new condition, which would be unlikely.
There are quite a few of the later model (1850W) with a black top to the motor housing around but these are probably quite a bit newer.
What would the age be of the 3612BR ? Any further comments welcomed.

top dollar
Paul
$120 to $140 would be good money for these type of router. I have two of them and the oldest one is due for new bearings and brushes now after about twenty years of service.
regards Mike.
