    Default Makita router Collet problems

    Hi,
I have an old Makita router where the collet is not letting half inch bits from being inserted easily or worse not being able to remove them. Any suggestions or where I can get this serviced in Melbourne?

Is it the single spanner type ? With a button to lock the shaft ? I’ve had the same with them and find there is a secondary level of undoing that has to be reached before it lets go . It may have been the same with the two spanner type but I haven’t used one of those for over 20 years .

As well as making sure it is sufficiently loosened prior to taking the bit out or putting the new bit in, take the collet out completely and ensure there isn't anything stuck behind it that might possibly make it tighter at times.

It may be a captive style collet; this requires TWO undoing actions.

1: Firstly lock the shaft as usual and undo the collet nut with the spanner; the nut should now be free to undo by hand.
2: Continue undoing the nut by hand until it gets tight; then put the spanner back on and repeat step 1. The collet should now be loose and the router bit easy to remove.

With these types of collets the taper is at a very shallow angle which increases the wedging action when tightening, the downside is that it is then reluctant to be released. The collet is clipped into the collet nut so after you’ve removed the initial clamping force (step 1) the nut is free to spin until it takes up the clearance in the “clip”. Step 2 uses the nut to then skull-drag the collet out of the tapered socket in the shaft.
Nothing succeeds like a budgie without a beak.

Just buy a new collet, they cost bugger all and will be much safer than mucking around with an old rusty one.

Sometimes with Very emphasise very light taps to the collet nut helps with loosening the collett

I had this problem with my Makita router. Have a look at the advice given thread. There were some great suggestions, including the one that worked for me.
