    Hi Dusty

My preferred option is to build the table out of a piece of 22mm veneered mdf (get a piece from a kitchen supplier with both sides done in corian or similar slippery stuff ) and then mount it directly beneath. Cut a hole through for the bits to come through and use an xtreme xtension collet to gain the height.

The advantages include a table that wont sag, no snagging or catching as the wood moves over the table onto the plate.

You will here people say these are dangerous or wobble or such, I would suggest these were incorrectly setup or a cheap version. My router actually runs smoother with the added weight

I'd probably want more than 22 mm for an mdf top, but I guess if you support it well.

I'd probably go 2 layers of 16 - 18 mm mdf routed out around where the base goes. YMMV.

    Hi,

I just thought I'd throw this in: I recently received the phenolic Veritas Base Plate/Insert from Lee Valley (http://www.veritastools.com/Products/Page.aspx?p=205). I haven't had time to build router table to put it in yet, but I bought this one because I wanted to be able to switch between hand-held/table-mounted modes easily. It's also relatively cheap (43USD with the reducing insert) and if the instructions are anything to go by, relatively easy to set up without having scores of unnecessary pre-drilled holes.

Check out http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com...ad.php?t=10745 for a review from these forums and http://www.whitemountdesign.com/RouterTableProject.htm for a router table design (OK, this is for the 2.25HP router but the principles are similar).

    Regards,
    Marvin

Thanks damian for all the good info. The links are appreciated as I had never been on those sites before. Lots of options to think about. The aluminum plate and metal inserts incra have look pretty slick but a little pricey at this time for me. Big Shed's plate seems like a reasonable option. It appears that only 3 inserts come with the plate. I assume more inserts of different sizes can be had if needed. Dazzler also had a good set-up but I'm leaning towards the plate because of the ease of changing inserts vs other methods mentioned in this thread. The incra fence on ebay way very enticing but the plastic inserts on the plate are not exactly what I want. The fence alone might be worth the money though. The more I learn, the harder it is to decide on a system. Regardless, I appreciate all the thoughts and experience members of this forum have shared.

    Thanks a bunch!

Have a solid poke around. There are many many insert makers all offering similar product and as I said the prices vary a lot.
