Poor Suport by Makita for RT0700 C Router

I recently purchased a Makita RT0700 C router - for those of you who don't know this model, its virtually a trimmer sized router with the power of a much larger tool. In Australia, Makita sell this router (via bunnings) as a trimmer but advise you can purchase as an accessory different bodies to mount the router in such a plunge body for normal hand held routing as well as a tilt body and an off-set body (haven't worked out what I woould need them for). In other countries such as the UK you can actually buy the whole lot with all the accessories in the one kit - but not here in Aus.

Anyhow I purchase the plunge body through a Makita service agent and it doesn't have the guide rail assembly for attaching the straight fence. I contact Makita and they have no idea what this part is and have no number in the system to order it. No number means it can't be ordered. I try talking to the UK Makita support and they indicate that the guide rail is part of the plunge base - no individual number.

If only Makita had brought this router in as a full kit instead of some half-arsed half completed system. These little routers are the best I've ever used and being so small makes them a dream to use but the lack of proper support has certainly hobbled their ability. Anybody found a fix for this stupidity

Return it under the consmer act "not suitable for use for which it was designed" the buy one from UK

Tilt body allows you to finish things at an angle using a straight bit, eg bevelled edge around a laminate bench top with a straight bit instead of a bevel bit, or achieve an odd angle that there isn't a bit for.

Offset body systems are normally belt drive and can get into tight corners while keeping the bulk of the base on the surface for support, typically can get you within about 20mm of a corner where a normal base might hit a wall 60-70mm or more from the corner. Both primarily suited to trimming rather than routing.

could you please tell me what is the exact outer diameter of body in mm size.

Assuming you mean the motor body, it is 64.91mm in diameter according to my calipers.

Purchased one of these today from Total Tools for $149 (three day Makita Sale), and asked about the plunge base but decided not to order it at the time (they quoted $98 for it, and the lack of knowledge at the shop turned me off spending any more money, asked about a set of brad point drill bits and everyone but the owner stared at me with blank faces).

Sydney Tools have it for $79 plus postage so I was thinking to get it from them, but might put in a phone call first to make sure it can take the fence. Looking at UK and US sites it looked like this was the cheapest way to get the plunge base.

Spent a long time trying to decide what router to get. If I had unlimited funds I actually wouldn't have got one at all and instead bought a bunch of specialised planes (moving fillister, plough, moulding, etc) but worked out that it would be much cheaper to buy a router. Used it a little bit today and was very happy with it.

I'll see how I go with Sydney Tools tomorrow and make sure to post any updates here.

Hi Sean

Have you tried Just Tools, South Melbourne ?

i've tried dealing with Sydney Tools on quite a few occasions, not good, just made a purchase from Just Tools based on comments in a few forums and that matched up to others comments, good communication and very fast delivery.

While I'm not adverse to internet shopping, when it's a few hundred dollars I prefer to walk into a shop and see what I'm getting but in future I'll be looking to order online from Just Tools rather than walk around the corner to Sydney Tools.

Decided that I'm going to prioritise getting a few quality router bits ahead of getting any other accessories. Was pleased to find the Just Tools website had the plunge base and the straight guide however, and once I've got the funds (or the nerve to use the CC) I think I'll be purchasing from there.
