My next stop is Sydney Tools, fun fun. Where I will probably buy the Makita.
To those of you with router experience, what is the general rule for speed setting with a variable speed router? My table router has 2 speeds, adjustable by changing the drive belt to the other pully.
The larger the diameter of the cutter, the slower you should spin it, generally. But don’t go too slow, most routers go down to slow spindle speeds for cutting plastics and such. In timber you you need a bit more grunt

Nah, I’ve got one. It’s rubbish. Looks great on paper, but the execution is poor.

I bought the makita yesterday and used it today. Super smooth and plenty of grunt. Time will tell but by the look and feel it will outlast me. So far so good.
I got from syd tools and as I was going there, thought I would return a milwaukee 18v drill purchased 12mths ago. The chuck has always been rs and kept locking up. So 5yrs warranty on the drill but surprise surprise only 3mths on the chuck or any wearing part. And, you can only replace the chuck with another milwaukee because of the new thread size. Anyway the router is good.

    1/2" router: about 6K-20K
    1/4" router: about 10K-24K

    Default Router table routers

I have been investigating available routers for table use. Reading reviews has made me Leary. Is there a router that will last when under slung a table? I make things worse by having a router lift that requires a 3.5” diameter motor.

I bought the AEG from Bunnies. Most shops don't have it in stock so instead of chasing it around I ordered online and got it in a few days.
I recommend it if the 1400 wattage works for you. It comes with fixed and plunge base, 1/4" and 1/2" collet with cocentricity guides, a set of bushings, lots of parts for dust extraction which generally works well, very nicely made fence, it has a key for adjusting from above the router table with the fixed base, and if that doesnt work for you it is also compatible with one of the Jessem kits (can't remember which one exactly, you'll have to look it up). And a nice extra base with an ergonomic handle, and a big bag for everything. All the parts look and feel well made, everything works, the only dumb mistake I can see is you have to sand down the head of a screw a little bit because it obstructs the height adjustment key. For the height adjustment on the router table you have to release the safety lock on the fixed base first, but it's a large and easy to reach one. In terms of releasing the motor from under the table, that's easy, putting it back in takes a little getting used to, you have to align a little dot with a channel on the fixed base. Feels like the sort of thing you need to have 3 hands at first but it gets more doable with practice. The key for the height adjustment is probably the only thing that doesnt feel well made, some sort of soft plastic, but that shouldn't be hard to replace with a metal key from a bicycle shop.

Now in terms of long term reliability of the motor, I have no idea obviously, but given the 5 year warranty from AEG (if you register) I'll take my chances. Lots of router for $400.

Does the AEG router have a 3.5” body to suit the poster’s router lift?

The diameter of the motor is 3 and 6/10ths of an inch.
