    Default Router accessory query

Hi group, just a small query, have a Plunge Router that takes 1/4" and 1/2" bits, am considering a table, home made, am by no means a woodie, just necessity has guided me to DIY, am on a Carers Pension with Grandkids, want to build a small double sided table for our G/D that is 12 months old. want to have one side with Blackboard and on flip side the White surface, being very highly paid as a Carer I have to go for the Best, should I buy an insert and build around it, Ali or Phen?, there is so much info out there it is confusing, will not be a regular thing, just as needs arise, like a new Dining Table, replace all the tops in the Kitchen and Dining that are made of Chip Board, water damage bowed and Laminates is starting to lift, quite a long stretch only about 20cm wide by about 8mts not a straight line, like a "T", would a Table be the way to go or just free hand, have the basic Router Bit set, and just got a Biscuit bit for the small table.

Any tips or advice will be appreciated, have done a TAFE course a few yrs ago on Hand Tools and using Routers etc, safety first, why am thinking Table as it is more safer, lost the top of my thumb sliding it into a Rip Saw, not a big chunk just the tip and don't want to go there again.
    Cheers
