Default Best router bit for cutting tenons

    I am thinking about 1 1/2 to 2" diameter.

Is there anything that will do a perfect tenon first time up without splintering shoulders etc
    Regards, Bob Thomas

Yep a tennon jig on a table saw, far quicker and accurate.
But if you must use a router, spiral up bits work just fine if you have a M&T jig like rockers... they're a bit to smaller dia just using a temp fence.
A router adjustable dado jig makes a quick'n'easy way you can cut several pieces at once depending on the size of your jig(mine cuts 10pieces X50mm wide at once, allowing extra for tearout block), using a standard large dia straight cutter, you just line up the shoulder of tennon on one side of jig then set the other side out enough to cut the whole side of tennon and still support the router. Set yer depth and away you go... pays to clamp the pieces together underneath so there's absolutely no chance of movement while cutting(adding/holding the tearout block too)

If you are going to use a router to cut the tenons I'd use an upcut spiral bit.

Have a look at mark the unspellables band saw video and you will wonder why you asked. That bloke is good.
Any thing with sharp teeth eats meat.
    Most powertools have sharp teeth.
    People are made of meat.
Abrasives can be just as dangerous as a blade.....and 10 times more painfull.

    Default Surface planing bet

I have been using this little beauty from Carba-tec for a lot of things.

It is a surface planing bit, it cuts full width on the bottom as well as the sides.

As it can be plunged without a pilot hole you can cut a 1 1/2 inch mortice with no rooting around.

The second pic is the jig I use for cutting mortices.
