    Default Router bit pulling out

Any suggestions on the following. On several occasions I have had straight and dovetail 1/4" shank bits pull right out of the Triton router. Speed has been set to the highest. It has occurred in both hard and soft woods. The latest incident was when using a template and 1/4" diameter bit to creat a letter in a piece of pine. The depth of cut was only about 2mm. Pulled the collet and bit right out. I believe that I am tightening the 1/4" insert sufficiently. Don't want to do chin-up on it. Previuosly I was using the Euro jig to cut dovetails with a 1/2" cutter on a 1/4" shank - bad news. Don't have a problem with 1/2" shanks. The only reason I use 1/4" shank bits is that I have a boxed set of them. As I determine which ones I use the most, when replacement time comes I purchase CMT 1/2" bits. Help please!

    Default Collet slipping

    Hi,

Don't know the Triton setup but are you using a 1/4" sleeve in a 1/2" collet?

If so, is there plenty of clearance in the sleeve slot when closed around the bit?

Just in case sleeve is not closing completely, I have had some 1/4" bits in a set that were incorrectly ground to between 5thou under and 5thou oversize.

I have a dodgey collet somewhere which does the same thing in my Makita. I grabbed a genuine collet at the power tool shop and problem solvered. Its probably either the manufacture of the bits or the collet.

I had the bit wander off once and it buggered the inlay piece I was working on so I wont let it happen again.

    Cheers

    Thumbs up

The 1/4 to 1/2 adapter for my Bosch router has z step that goes above larger collet so it does not come out this type fixes your problem . Take your collets put them together with a bit in and tighten them up in a vice to see if the larger collet is closing up properly yhis couldbe your problem.

Collets can wear out, so I'd try a new collet.

Squizzy, beware, Makita have a 8mm collet which is not quite a 1/4".
I have a Makita 8mm Router with a 1/4" collet, not much difference but enough to cause a problem.

    Default collet

Are you using the latest type of 1/4" collet adaptor from Triton the one with a circlip ring around its top edge. But I bet the 1/4" bits you are using are most probably cheapo's. I used my cheap set just to practice with when I got my first router, and now I have chucked them in the bin.

Thanks for the replys. The router is only about 2 months old and the 1/4" collet insert has not had much use, so should not be worn out. The bits are cheap ones. As I mentioned, rather than wait and purchase a bit each time I needed a new type, I purchased a set then replace the ones I used frequently with CMT brand. However, the 1/2" dovetail bit was a CMT and pulled out as soon as I tried to use it on the jig with pine timber. Looks like any replacement will be 1/2" shank. The 1/4" collet insert is now cactus, so will have to get a new one.

Bob, something not mentioned is that it is a good idea to have the open slot in the reducer lined up with the open slot in the collet. This is the go with the collet & reducer on my Hitachi m12v.

Presume the router bit shanks are free of rust or any other gunge, and that you are not letting the bits bottom out in the collet. Also ensure the inside of the collet and reducer are free of any burrs or anything that could be stopping full contact when tightening.

    Cheers..............Sean

Never had this problem with my Triton router Bob.

Maybe you just need to ask Triton for a new insert?

    Bob,
I just visited to search this site for....wait for it....1/4" cutters pulling out of a Triton router! I have had my router for a year but it has seen very little use as I have moved house and therefore workshop. I am trying to use Leigh supplied 1/4" cutters with a Triton supplied reducer in hand held mode and they are travelling. They have not travelled as far as yours clearly have, but with dovetails, any travel is bad news.
The cutters are new, from a reputable source, and the reducer has seen very little use.

I have contacted Triton and suggested that it should be possible to fit the router with a dedicated 1/4" collet. I suggest that you do the same as we might then receive a positive reply. In the meantime I have returned to my 30 year old Elu and it works 10x sweeter.

Triton replaced the original 3 slot collet with a 4 slot collet.
The three slot collet caused vibration and the bit could come loose. The 4 slot collet fixed the problem.

    Thank you sprog.
Yes my collet has 3 slots so I hope Triton will come good and replace it with the updated version. Did you have the same problem? And did they replace it?

    John

I saw another post about the updated collet so I requested a new one from Triton. They replaced it with a new 4 slot collet free of charge.

I had the same problem with my Triton Router of 1/4" bits slipping. I have had no problem since Triton sent me their new 4 slot collet with the ring at the top.
