I wrote a "Basic Routing Tips" page a while ago, which might help. It's here if you get the time.

I have generally bought individual quality bits as I have needed them but temptation got the better of me and at a WWWW show I got myself a cheap set of 1/4" just to see what they were like. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised after some light use but I generally only do edge moulding. Having said that, the old rule still stands true: you pay for what you get.

I bought a set of cheap bits yeas ago and find I only use a couple or so of the bits and the others are left in the box. Much better to buy good quality single bits you will be using regularly than having a box full of bits you are never going to use.

I have over a dozen bits. Some get used all the time, others were bought for a specific project and may not have been used since. One or two were bought on a whim but have not been used (yet).
    Buy as you need.
