    Default Router bit slipping

    Hi all,

I have the Triton 2400W router in my router table. Everytime I put my spiral upcut (1/4) router bit in the router, it slips and the bit rises. It's damaged 2 boxes iv'e made now, does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this.

It doesn't happen to any other router bits, 1/4 inch or 1/2 inch.

I know Roger Gifkins sells an after market reducing collet for the tritons, could this be a possible fix?

The pics below is an example of how much the bit is slipping.

    Hi,
Are you sure it is not a 6 mm? The other thing it is the only type of bit that will put upward force on because of the twist. I have the Gifkin collet and it is much better than the original and will probably fix your problem.

I got the bit from carbitool - surely they wouldn't sell 6mm bits? I'll check the package later.

I might look into buying Rogers collet.

I have had a similar problem with the 3/8" version of the same bit. With HSS bits you can add grip by roughing the shank with 240 grit sandpaper - solid carbide just wears the paper down You just need to find a reducer collar or an appropriate collet that is VERY snug and tighten the crap out of it.

There has been much discussion on these forums about replacement chucks for the Triton routers.

It appears that Tritons sold in the USA have two separate collets. One for 1/4" and one for 1/2" whereas our machines have only a 1/2" (still different to the US) and an adaptor down to 1/4".

A company called routerchucks are selling the american version currently through ebay.

There has been much discussion through the forums. This might help

The second thread is particularly long but describes the grief of some members. Worth plowing through. Routerchucks are now selling their replacement (3 separate parts) for $85 or maybe less. I have ordered one from them at the weekend and am waiting for delivery. The Gifkins adaptor (pictured in the first thread) looks to be a well made product and much cheaper if it is still $14 or even a bit more.

Thanks for the replies. I will order one of Rogers new collets (better than his original one - $28 delivered ). I'll let you know how it goes.

I bought the replacement chuck from routerchucks and can attest to their quality and the performance improvement over the old Triton chuck. They also provided great instructions describing how to swap the old one out and replace it with the new one.
