No gouges on the shank as it was too deeply embedded but there are some light scratches on the outside of the non cutting surface of the blade. I popped it back into the collet (after cleaning all connecting surfaces) and locking the collet back into the nut (thanks Bohdan & Treecycle). I didn't know about the nut locking step. It all seems to work well, cut well and the bit came out again. I'll take it as a win.

I put a small rubber washer or "O" ring into the collet before putting the bit in. It is easier than remembering to keep the bit from going in too far.
I have the 3612 and had a similar issue with bits sticking on occasions until I did this.
Tip found on this Forum some years ago.

collets in nuts
Here is a thing discussing collets and how they get wedged in.
It also shows how to fit the collet back into the nut.
Its not immediately obvious if they are separable and you/previous do separate them accidentally.... the hole looks too small.... Often collets will be kept in place by a sprung c-clip, but YMMV
Using ER nuts and collets
Bauldys tip on the rubber O-ring is spot on. A ring off the Gardena hose quick-plug is exactly the right size I know
