    Default Router Bits

Can someone tell me if there is any real advantage in using 1/2" shank router bits in the smalles sizes, eg 1/4" straight cut bits?

I feel that a 1/4" shaft on these would be as strong as a 1/2" due to the tapering down to the cutter size.

I have given up using the $9 bits as they seem to be made of carrots, but are the next best really around $29? Is there not something in between that are reasonably durable?

    Regards

    Neil.

The only advantage I can see is that you don't need to use a collet reducer with the 1/2" shank.

Thanks Silent...I can't see any other real benefit either.

"The 1/2" is stronger over its whole lenght, the 1/4" has a 1/4" dia over its whole lenght a 1/2" has only a few mm of 1/4" dia. It easier to bend a longer piece of metal rod than it is to bend a short piece of rod the same dia."
I read that somewhere cant remember, could have been a Pat Warner book?
