Router for Gifkin Jig
Hi All,
I bought a gifkin jig at the brisbane WWW show. I currently have a Hitachi TR12 in my table but i'm getting tired of having to reach under the table to change bits with multiple spanners and to adjust the height.
Would the Triton MOF001 be a suitable replacement. Is it ok for under table use or should i get the larger TRA001B. I really didnt want to get another large router as I would have to TR12.
There are a few MOF001 on ebay that are reasonably priced.
Cheers
Michael.

Router for Gifkins Dovetail Jig
I have the MOF in my Gifkins Table and it is fine for the small boxes and drawers that I make. I'm mostly using 1/2 inch (or thinner) boards. If I was to use the larger router bits required for the 3/4 inch boards I would take it more slowly or swap over to my TRA001.
I always listen to my router and slow the feed rate down if it seems that the router is working too hard.
Check out eBay seller Cheaptoolsau for both the MOF and the larger router. I have had great service from his team.
Hope that this helps.

Hi Interwood,
Thanks for the feedback. I doubt if i would be using wood any thicker than a 1/2". So the MOF001 should do. I was looking at the ones at cheaptoolsau. I have also found one in brisbane for the same price and I would be able to pick it myself saving me the $30 freight that cheaptoolsau charge.
Cheers
Michael.

I notice the large router sold by cheaptoolsau still has the 1/4" reducing collet. Something is amiss.

I'm a little confused with the different triton models. cheaptoolsau have a TRS001. Is this the same as the TRA001/TRA001B. Does the TRS001 have the through table height adjuster, its a bit hard to tell from the photo's.
For an extra $29 i think i will get the TRS001 for the table/gifkin jig if it has the through table height adjuster.

Just check out which collets come with the TRS001. It states that it is 1/2" with 1/4" reducing collet. This seems to be the old style triton collets that do not hold the cutters very well. I have ruined some beautiful timber panels with this collet. The new routers come with what we know as the USA style collets for the triton routers. I purchased these collets separately for my routers and they are much better and also have a dedicated 1/4" collet instead of using a reducing sleeve.
Regards
Les
PS. I notice that the 1400W router that he sells also only has the 1/4" reducing collet. This points to them being the old style collets. The new JOF1010 has the new style collets. However, the new TRA001B sold by Carbatec has the new style collets.Last edited by lesmeyer; 30th May 2011 at 10:16 PM. Reason: additional info

Hi Les,
Thanks for the tip on the collets. I wasn't aware there were issues with the reducing sleeves.

Hi All,
I have bought a triton MOF001 from cheaptoolsau. I spoke to them today and it just happened that they had a MOF001 kit in a plastic case. Comes with template kit and height winder, all for $240 and free shipping.
Cheers
Michael.

Hi Michael,
I have used a number of routers and router tables with my Gifkin jig but, when I made my new router table, I also made a new router plate and fitted 2 Trend T5 routers so that I would have BOTH the straight and dovetail bits constantly available. It seemed to halve the time taken to make a box. The 2 T5's fitted comfortably onto a standard router plate and don't interfere with each other when using either.

Worried man
Hi All
I am buying a TRS001 from Cheaptools Vic I have just read lesmeyer concerns about the chucks. I am a bit worried now what I have brought! I was told by Cheaptools that it was the same as TRA001 could you please explain exactly what the problem is if any! If the chucks are not the right ones, can I buy the right ones for this Triton Router please keep in mind I am not the shartest tool in the shed. TRITON WORKCENTRE ROUTER 2000W BRAND NEW RARE TRS001

Colin, please see post #24 in this thread for an explanation. My feeling is that it's actually a TRA001, because it talks of an ½" collet with a ¼" reducer. Don't forget that "A" is right next to "S" on the keyboard!

Trs001
Hi Ray
Well my router turned up and their it was on the box TRA001!
But there was a sticker on the side saying technical specifications model TRS001 motor 2000w the plot thickens up here because I pulled the sticker off and there it was TRA001 but there is said 2400 watts what do you make of that! the router works fine, I wonder if is a 2400 watt model which I believe for whatever reason they were rebadged still confused Col
Ps (Sticker on router TRS001 MOTOR 2000 watts)

AFAIR, there was an obscure regulation somewhere regarding power tools with motors in excess of 2000W that required them to have a "dead-man's on/off switch (i.e., needed holding down rather than straightforward on/off switch. I can't lay my hands on it at this moment, so that's from memory.
I guessed that it would turn out to be a TRA001 by the collet type. Still a great machine, even better with the new-style collets.
Any other/further questions - fire away!
Ray
