    Default Router Questions

    Hi all,

    Some router questions please.

Are there any brands with the depth adjusting winding handle other than Triton?

What would be a minimum watt/hp requirement for a table mounted router?

Is there a "correct/best" distance between a mitre tack and the router collet on a router table?

Any tips on drilling and enlarging holes in an ABS Plastic router table insert?

As you can see I'm new to routing and starting almost from scratch.
Any tips etc would be most appreciated

    thanks
    Have a good one
    Keith

I would regard 2hp the minimum, I have the big Triton router and would rate that the best router for in table use.

Would not need above table height adjustment with this router it is just so easy to do from below the table. There are several threads on this.

I'll give you the dimensions of my router table. Top is 1150x800, this for my Incra jig, although I wouldn't want anything narrower than 800.
The PWS phenolic router plate is 300x235, the centre of the router collet is 350mm from the 800mm edge. The distance between the centre of the router collet and the centre of the mitre track is 185mm. There is 50mm between the dge of the router plate and the edge of the mitre track.

I used 32mm laminated particle board from A&R Secondhand, Hume Hwy Broadmeadows. It is standing up very well.

There was an article in FWW about routers with above table height adjustment, most are not available in Oz.

If you need any more measurements, please feel free to ask.

K_S I have the smaller Triton router mounted under my home-made table (described elsewhere in this Router Forum). My phenolic insert is the Woodpecker model from Proffessional Wooodworking Supplies ( A sponsor of this Forum). The only hole I needed to drill was that for the height-winder and it was very easy to do, using a 1/4in drill bit. My t-track is 18cm from the collett but it's entirely up to your judgement. My reason for 18cm was that it was half the widest board I thought I might route, thus providing a fair bit of support from the table. The other thing I strongly recommend is to have a power board so you can have the router go on at the same time as your dusty. I bought a big red switch from Triton to operate the table. (Search for "Yet Another Router Table").

    Hi,

Trend's T11 can be wound from both the top and bottom. The machines are built by Black & Decker and it and its co-existing predecessor, the T10, are about the only good machines they rebrand and flog off as their own...

You can check out more here: http://www.trendmachinery.co.uk/t10&t11/

The little Triton is only 1400 watts but seems to handle anything I've thrown at it - even hardwoods like cyprus and blackbutt. But I alway feed the hardwood stock fairly slowly and check that my bits are clean and sharp. Slow is about 1-2 cm per second, listening to the sound of the motor. You can usually hear the change in pitch if it's straining.
