Good news. I have the first generation silicon chip unit from the 90s which uses an IGBT. It’s failed twice. This unit seems more robust. Hopefully I will be able to just drop the new PCB into the existing die cast case. Looks like $10 for the PCB, $15 for the micro controller and $8.20 for the online magazine. Plus a few additional components.

How did the earlier one perform? If the new one performs as well as the speed controller/soft start in my Bosch MOF 1200 it would be excellent IMHO.

I got the copy of Silicon Chip and it looks a pretty straight forward build.

OK while it was working. Both times it failed was when I was using a 400W Metabo drill with a paint stirring paddle. I don’t think it was a very good design.

Any chance you could PM me some photos of the article so I can price up the parts before I commit to buying the PCB and chip?

    Cheers.
