Router sign writing
What suggestions are there out there for reasonably good jigs/templates for doing signwriting with a router ?
One suggestion I've had is the Milescraft sign crafter

Mate, went there the other day, downloaded it, got 2/3 rds the way thru and it wouldn't play the game any more..... but that brand looks simple enough for me

Strange. Will investigate. Try the mp4 version (download then watch) - that always seems more successful.
I'm almost tempted to disable the flv (flash) version - seems a never-ending drama."Clear, Ease Springs"

These were done freehand with the router. It is not as difficult as it looks and with a little practice you can acheive the same.
I have never used a template for signs but a small router and small diameter cutter is all you need.

And a far far more steady hand than I have, unfortunately.
Very nice, by the way.

There was a thread on the forum covering this subject some time ago last year. Might be worth a search.

Much better than I've ever achieved as well - it might be easy, but there is plenty of practice demonstrated in those 2 signs! They are very nicely done.

Well thanks guys. It is actually much easier than you might think. I use an Elu 96E for the signs but hold it by the base plate for more control and only take shallow cuts. Aberdeen, Yes us 'Codheads' get everywhere and our accent is unmistakable. I have a friend in China who is from Australia and he also said I had a distinct accent. Never really knew I did until then.

route sign writing
Aberdeen,
I got started when i read Patrick Spielmans book New Router Handbook. Has a chapter devoted to different technique. I use either a round nose cutter of a 60 deg spear point cutter from CMT. First I make a banner using aerial mt bold for the letters, transfer that to the timber and using either cutter in my of1010 incise the letters. If i am doing a raised letter sign i fit an extende3d sub base to the router and use upcut spiral cutters. If you want i can scan and send you the pages, pm me with an email address if you would like. Both techniques just need practice, i find the incised method easiest.
