Router table inserts - Shop Made
I have been tring to get my head around for the last while on how to make these.
I'm in the process of making a new router table. I've decided i'm going to use a similar design to Roger Gifkins router table plans.
I want to make about 5 or so zero clearance inserts to fit into the router table (small round piece of whatever my table is made of - mdf)
From what I read, and this is my understand (not sure if it's correct though) : Make a round circle out of mdf that's a bit bigger than your router base plate, and screw it to your base plate. Then use a dowel to insert into my scrap router table top (used for inserts) and drill a hole into the circle mdf thats attached to the router and rout a circle - then repeat for as many as you need?
If this is correct, could this process be done for both the initial hole in the router top, and for the zero clearance inserts?
Hope I make sence.
Also does anyone know how thick my router top can be if using the big triton router - so it doesn't interfere with changing bits above the table etc...? I was going to use the same method as Roger, but with 3 layers (middle layer being the one to attach the inserts to)

This is the big Triton (TRA001) used in a Rousseau insert which the makers say is ⅜" (9.5mm).

Thanks for the reply mate. My table will be about 25mm thick, anyone know if this will be ok to still be able to change bits above the table? I'll probably be picking up my router later in the week, but just a heads up as I'm making the table now.
Cheers, Andy

It doesn't matter how thick the table top is, but where the router attaches can't be more than ½" thick or you won't get a wrench on the collet nut. If you've already got the big Triton, then plunge the collet right through (power switch off) and see for yourself how much you've got to play with above the bottom of the metal base.
