    Default Router Vibration Problems

    Hi guys,
I have a Triton 1400w watt and when I went to use it the other day I noticed a heap of bit vibration in both long a short bits. It was so excessive that at high speed I could see the bearing on the end (this was on a 30degree chamfer bit) blurring like it wasn't spinning true and whipping around. Anyway, I tried a few other bits (all 1/2" shaft) with the same result. I put a dial indicator on the shaft and got a run-out of 0.08mm (that's 3 thou). I also tried completely replacing the collet and collet body (I had a spare one) and had the same result.
So to finally get to the point what is an acceptable amount of run-out and does this mean my armature is stuffed or could replacement bearings fix the problem.
Oh, I also found that when I removed the brushes one of them had a great big chunk out of it, I reshaped this and checked the commutator (it was fine) but I still had that vibration.
Sorry for the drawn out post
    Hope you can help
    Thanks
    Josh

sounds like you need a new collett.

I already tried that as well and found the same result (exact same amount of run-out)
    Thanks

if its only just started doing it it sounds like 2 possible reasons
    bent shaft - unlikely
or collett end shaft bearing packing up.

    Unplug the router.Obvious?
Turn the shaft by hand.If you feel a rough feeling in the shaft, it is the bearing.
Another way is mark the shaft and turn it checking with your dial indicator.
mark in a different color the hi side.Turn several more times then take another reading and check if it is still the same spot.If the bearing is shot, the hi side will be in a different spot. Did you try to wobble the shaft? the bearing maybe worn enough to get the shaft to wobble

    Thanks guys!
I could wobble the shaft, though it was hard to notice in the hands it read up on the dial indicator.
Turning the shaft by hand I couldn't feel any rough spots but when I gave it good spin up by hand I could hear a whirring sort of sound that i didn't notice when I did it slowly.
So I took it into the repairman and I guess we'll see what's wrong with it.
    Cheers

Well I just thought I would update,
My router is completed stuffed! Tried reshaping the brushes (apparently those speed control units can be sensitive to brush contact) but that didn't help so then I had new top and bottom bearings replaced but it did not correct the problem. So it appears I have a mystery bend in the main shaft and the vibration was so bad that the speed control sensor on the top of the shaft had worn into the surrounding plastic.
Anyway thank to Mr. Rudd I can go out and buy a new one!
I'm trying to decide between a DW625E and a M12V2 the Dewalts winning so far but I am open to suggestions.
    Cheers

Like many other people I have had one Hitachi for probably over 20 years and another for about 8 years and they are both still going strong. Very happy with both of them.

I have replaced the bearings and brushes a few times which is understandable because I give them both a fair bit of work.

Google "Ray Girling Triton", Ray is a pommie woodworker and Triton man, has disassembly instructions with words and pics for each series of Triton router, select the one you have and download.
I used to be an engineer, I'm not an engineer any more, but on the really good days I can remember when I was.
