    Default Routing odd 3D shape

    Hi All,</SPAN>

Just looking for some advice from those with a bit of experience under their belt on how to route unusual 3D shapes. The magnet in the attached photo weighs 15Kgs and I would like to make an acrylic stand for the driver (to go inside a clear acrylic box), so the driver is supported entirely by the magnet (lower driver resonance). Because it curves in all directions I was just wondering if it is possible to do or if I should perhaps be looking to show how cast a stand for it. Thanks in advance. I vaguely remember someone mentioning a mouldable plastic…</SPAN>

If I was routing that shape, this is what I would do.

    1. Measure - you need a really well done contour pattern of the shape.
    2. drill - use a drill press to drill holes into the material following the contour pattern and using the depth stop to stop the bit just short of the required depth. I would guess that a larger bit would remove more material more quickly, but a smaller one would do a finer job. Pay your money take your choice.
    3. Rout/carve - use the router (or chisels etc) to remove the waste. You would need to do a very careful freehand, or use a lot of patterns based on your contour pattern and making sure you get the depth right.
    4. sand - you will end up with a series of terraces that you will need to sand smooth.
The other day I described to my daughter how to find something in the garage by saying "It's right near my big saw". A few minutes later she came back to ask: "Do you mean the black one, the green one, or the blue one?".

I took a few more photos and did a SketchUp model based on the dimensions to see if I could calculate the angle, which I figure to be about 12 degrees. The sides seem quite straight like it was machined prior to painting.
So perhaps this may not be as hard as I first thought...

Here a better idea of what I am trying to achieve... if I used 10mm thick clear acrylic it might need 4 pieces side by side to get a width of about 40mm
The green bits would be the clear acrylic.
