Routing small templates
I need to rout out a small twisty shape (F hole for a guitar using a template .)
Its only about 4mm in the narrow part.
What would be the best way to do it.
I have a Dremel,1/4 Laminate trimmer,1/4 Router and a table mounted 1/2 router.
I was thinking of small Guide Bushes but I am not sure if this will work?
Thanks
Greg

I'm not aware of a Dremel base plate that can accept guide bushes, and table mounted would be hard to observe the work. I'd use the regular router with guide bushes, and a veining bit - about 1/8", which would fit within your 4mm narrow part. Make the outside of the template large enough for clamping and base plate clearance, and flip it over to do the opposite side.

Hi Greg,
You are entering a whole new world, which will grip you and give you more options with projects.
Take your time making the templates. I have found mdf is good, because when you are cutting out the template there is no grain direction to distort a cut.
Cheers,

Hi Greg,
Joe and Conwood have already offered some excellent suggestions, and there is also a lot to be found on the web, like this knowledge section from Trend:
Template Routing - Part 1 - Trend
As pure chance would have it, i recently bought a Bosch jig saw from the world famous Rainer Leonhardt workshops in Mittenwald, the German mecca of string instrument manufacturing. Leonhardt used it for exact the same purpous as you: for cutting F-holes. The saw was a surplus machine, he decided to sell it together with lots of other stuff, to clean out some of his storage space. I gathered that at Leonhardt's the F-hole cutting was done by hand in the classical way, starting off from a drilled hole and following the shape contour lines drawn on the wood, although i didn't ask if they nowadays also use template routing. Anyway, here's the original Ebay Germany auction site, with me (member name "g3dm") being the winner:
Geige Cello Stichsäge Bosch bei eBay.de: Sägen (endet 05.06.10 11:55:24 MESZ)
It's exactly like Conwood said: you'll be entering a beautiful and very rewarding field of woodwork.
good luck and greetings!
