    Default Rusty cast iron table

I finally got around to assembling the Carbatec Cast Iron Router table for my woodwork classroom. After an hour or so of screwing together it was up.
A good clean with kerosene got rid of the oily film over the surface.

And that's where my problems began.

2 weeks later, there are lots of small rusty spots appearing all over the surface.

Does anyone have suggestions of what I could rustproof the surface with?

    Thanks for any help offered

    Chris

Woodworkers wax will do. Ubeaut trad wax is fine.

Use some fine steel wool to lift the rust and then smear a fine but even coat of wax on.

Don't store stuff on the table. A cotton sheet or similar over the top is good. Check regularly.
    Cheers, Ern

I'll give it a good wire wool and then wax it up.
Then there is just the table saw, the thicknesser and the planer to do.

    Smile Try Inox

    Hello Haggismuncher,

I found myself asking the same question of several machine suppliers at last years Timber and Working with Wood show in Melbourne. I had intended to buy some Silver Glide, but couldn't get near the sales counter. Anyhow, two of the machine salesmen recommended 'Inox'. It's Australian made and developed I believe and contains no nasty silicone. I just spray it onto all of my cast iron surfaces and leave it with a cotton towel/sheet over the top. I give the surface a quick wipe before I next use the machine and hey presto. It's quick and easy to use if you're pressed for time. Hope this helps.

    Cheers,

    Reggie

Phosphoric acid is very effective, it converts the surface layer of iron to an iron phosphate that gives corrosion protection. You can boil steel in straight phosphoric acid to do this, but probably not very practical for a table. I've used it on machined mild steel motorcycle parts which stayed rust free for several years.

Presume it would work on cast iron too, probably worth doing a scan of proprietary rust removal/conversion/passivation products to see if they do one you could use. It'd need testing somewhere out of the way just in case...

penetrol, from a paint store ,brush it on and wipe it off, then wax over the top youll never have a problem unless you leave it out in the rain.

I second the Silverglide. Works well for me.

Did you get the router table that extends from your table saw? What do you think of it?

    Cheers,
    Af.
