Alastair,
thanks again. I think I understood this time. However, as I am only doing 2 sides (not the ends as they have their own decoration) it won't help me in this situation. I will however do a good check on the end grains and be particularly careful on the exit end when I am going against the grain. I actually plan to use clamped sacrificial pieces on entry and exit on both sides.
The more I get into this game, the more I realise how much there is to learn. I'm glad I'm taking on a relatively simple first project but am enjoying it immensely and learining plenty on the journey.

Going back to the original question of how far to insert the bit into the collet. I recall being told that the tool should be inserted 1.5 x diameter of the shaft, thus for a 12.7 mm shaft insert the bit 19 mm and for a 6.35 mm shaft insert 10 mm.
