Harry, Went to Timbecon today and saw the enclosed bearings in two sizes. Worth a phone call as I did not check the price for a packet of them. Too busy buying a bandsaw fence!!

Harry, I should have looked before I posted. Went to the Timbecon site and under Sawing Roller Support Stands they have photos of the "Transfer Balls" in 16mm and 25mm. The 16mm come in a packet of 6 for $24.90.

After viewing the site that Howard posted I looked through the current Carba-Tec catalogue and they have what you describe albeit @ $39.00 for six of the 25mm ones however, the mounting is not as versatile as the US ones so I took the bull by the horns and ordered ten of them this morning and if the intended purpose doesn't work out, they'll probably be left for my son to dispose of eventually!

I am not sure if the ball rollers would be the way to go?
Using ball rollers may be getting away from the principal of using the Ski principal ( skiing across snow covered field) , the reason behind why I question using ball rollers is that the base surface that the skies would be rolling on would have to be dead flat. Any slight indentation or imperfection in the base surface would be mirrored in the surface being machined and skimmed by the router bit, that is the ball would be following the indentation in the base surface as you are now relying on a very small surface of the ball making contact. With the original ski system the surface is in contact over a larger surface and would tend to ride over minor indentations. Perhaps the way to go would be to have a non friction surface applied to the bottom of the ski.
Just a thought.
Regards
Mac

You are so right Mac. I hadn't thought of that, but I do have a Melamine covered top that I normally have underneath my sacrificial chipboard top that could be used. In the more than ten years that I've been using my ski set-up, I've never had a problem of any sort and it was only a few days ago when rollers were mentioned that it got me thinking, so I'll re-design the skis, more on the lines on the original Trend skis and see if there is any improvement in operation. Watch this space!

Rollers?
That is a point well taken, Mac ! It might be such a thing that the routing may have to be done on large piece of tempered glass. The rollers could then pass smoothly on the glass surface. Harry; I have six pieces of tempered glass. Sorry that Your way over there!!!! They measure 30 1n. By 46in. and could be set up on each side of the workpiece so rollers are smooth rollen. Might need a vacumn mounted at each roller Just a thought!

We mustn't get carried away here, my experience is that there should be some friction otherwise the skis can "run away" I'll carry on and make new skis when the rollers arrive just for the hell of it and then present a project with photo-shoot together with my conclusion, keep watching this space!
