    Default Stuck Collet

I cannot get the bit out of my 1050W GMC router. The button that you press in to lock the collet (spindle lock) while you use the spanner, is slipping. Is it stuffed? I would like a more powerful router. What should I buy in the budget range?

    Thumbs down Collet stuck

G'day gilbo. Ive always managed to loosen stuck things with a blowtorch and 6pound hammer.

About a better and more powerful router- Try secondhand Hitachi or Makita. IMHO you won't get a really good budget range powerful router.

    GMC router?

If the button you press swings an exposed lever over the shaft to lock it (like mine) then it is probably stuffed... mine rounded out. I eventually replaced the mechanism with salvage from another dead GMC router and until then I'd simply removed the whole lever assembly and used a flat spanner to lock the shaft. That worked well. (But who really wants to carry extra spanners around from site to site? )

(Beaten by an ant-eater. Oh, the shame! The ignominy! )
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

It seems you have already been bitten by a budget router, why buy another one ? Have a look on E bay , you might pick up a second hand Makita or Hitachi for not much more than a new GMC or Ozito. I have 2 makita routers , one is over 20 years old and still going as good as new, even after being dropped off the bench twice .
