Default Table router or spindle moulder?

I don't actually understand what the differences are in these two machines. Leaving the handheld router use completely aside, what can a spindle moulder do that a table router can't (and vice versa)?

I would imagine that spindle moulder bits are more expensive with a much less plentiful range of shapes and brands, and perhaps someone can comment on that too please. Or can router bits be used in a spindle moulder?

    Regards, Brett

    A few differences.

    Spindle moulder:

+ can angle the spindle giving more design variations from a single cutter
+ is more industrial (takes more off)
+ usually has a heavier steel table
    + takes larger cutters
+ Some spindle moulders allow router bits to be used too
+ can take an auto-feed unit
+ can make your own cutters or match any commercial router bit design
    + generally more durable
+ excellent for repetitive heavy duty work

    - can take your arm off
    - expensive
    - heavy and fixed machine

    Router:

+ flexible (table or hand held)
    + portable
    + lighter
    + off the shelf cutters
    + faster cutter change
    + cheaper
    + excellent for multi-tasking
+ can be used after assembly of workpiece if needed

    - noisier
    - shorter life (generally)
    - can take a finger off

Not sure about the moulder taking an arm off, I do know a few people who've lost fingers though.

I know several people who have been badly frightened by spindle moulders......

Its the one machine I'd consider getting a powerfeed for.

Modern cutterheads are safer, but with older machines we were always told to make sure you were ducked down below the level of the table when turning it on.....just in case.
