Mat I am not familiar with the Part Number from Makita so I cannot comment at this stage, but I will make the effort to find out about it. I thought the Triton plate was suitable for larger guides 30plus. For the Hitachi guide to fit the Triton Base it must have a larger rebate.

These have a 30mm hole with a 35mm diameter rebate. Circular screw in template guides such as the carbatec set mentioned at the start of this thread, LV guides or Leigh guides then fit into this hole. These template guides can then have a multitude of different outside diameters.

I see where you are comming from with the Circular screw in template guides again you are limited in size which means there is a limitation on the size of the cutter that can be used. For one of my projects I was using a 32 mm Dish Cutter TD 716 1/2 from the Carb-I-Tool catalogue and therefore required a guide larger than 30mmAnother such cutter from the same catalogue I used was TX 512 1/2 extending rounding over cutter

Anyone purchasing a router should take into consideration what has been said on the topic and that is the size of the opening on the base of the router. Of course we do not want it too large as then we have problems with stability. Of course to overcome that problem we could use a router support.

Tom, I guess my point was that you were flogging the idea of the 40mm guide with no rationale being given.

To my mind it would have been better to point out sooner what you consider to be the advantages you ended up mentioning in post #15.

Coiuld be of more use in communicating a point of view.

Offered in the spirit of honest feedback.

As Stuart said "We heard it 12 months ago, and its starting again. No one else seems to care whether it is 30 or 40mm as standard". You also must have been aware of my comments in the past or you would not have followed Stuart with your posting "Know any other tunes, Tom?" I was never asked why I use the larger guide and I possibly would not have given the reason except for you and Stuart's comments which were of no help to the person asking the questions.

What I said in my opinion was to answer the posting before me.

I know I have said it all before and I will continue to repeat it if someone wishes to hear it as I am convinced that the larger guide is the way to go

I was getting worried that I'd sparked off an argument here. As it turned out, I found the Carba-tec base plate that Mat suggested and it suits my purposes perfectly for the moment. Thanks for all the input guys and especially to Tom for taking the time to pass on his experience. I am very new to using guides (and woodwork in general) and although most of what Tom said went over my head, I hope to keep the info in mind. Appreciate the advice.
