    Default Template guide adaptor

    Guys & Girls,
I just got a Hitachi TR12 router (I know it has been discontinued but it was a bargain I couldn't pass up). I was hoping to be able to use the template guide set that I got from Carba-tec, the 7 piece brass set. I thought that the TR12 came with a baseplate adaptor with the 30mm hole required for the template guide but this appears not to be the case. Does anyone know of a source for the adaptor, if there even is one, to save me having to make a specialised baseplate?

    Cheers

Pete it would be cheaper to purchase the template Guides and also you will be able to get a 40mm Guide which is not available with the kit you are looking at\

Don't know where to get a baseplate adapter, but it is a piece of p1ss to make another baseplate.

Just use the existing one to trace around & mark the holes, mount to the router using the existing screws, and plunge a bit through to get a centred hole.

I have the Hitachi M12V & did exactly this (for a router table insert tho' )

    Unhappy Template guide adaptor

    Tom and Scooter,
    Thanks for the input guys.

Tom: I already have the Carba-tec set of guides which I was hoping to use in the Hitachi but I guess I could always use them in the GMC. I have not seen a guide set for the Hitachi so I'll have to look around for them.

Scooter: I don't have a problem with making a new base plate out of MDF or perspex but the set of guides I have are the ones that require a 30mm hole with a 3mm rebate around the edge so the guide sits flush with the base plate. I don't have a 30mm router bit to plunge the centre hole and the "30mm" forstner bit I have only makes a 28.5mm hole .

    Nothing's ever easy is it?

Carbatec sell a universal router base plate that fits the brass router bushing set. See p130 current catalogue.

Lee Valley also sell a base plate with the central hole/rebate as do McJing

Pete, if you end up buying another template guide set for your Hitachi, check out the Triton set, they are the correct fit for my M12V.

    Stuart and Scooter

ROUTING FORUM This is your chance to partake in discussions, get or give information and help, etc. on routers and how to use them.

As the title states we are here to help others. Both your last comments were of no assistance to anyone purchasing the correct item. I was only giving advice and maybe preventing someone from purchasing the wrong attachments for their router.

I will continue to give advice on the subject to those who care to ask when it is called for.

Point is, it seems one of your main topics of conversation is that the 40mm is the standard size, and the Triton's 30mm is not. We heard it 12 months ago, and its starting again. No one else seems to care whether it is 30 or 40mm as standard.

FWIW, the industry standard size on a lot of routers is 1 3/16".....equals 30.1625mm.....

Re the standard size of a template Guide supplied with the router at one stage was 16mm 17mm or 18mm depending on the router you purchased at the time. I suppose we should not use the Term Standard size as I use all the guides from 12mm through to 100mm (Yes I have made my own guides to complete projects that required a larger Guide)

When Makita withdrew their template Guide from their accessories I also contacted them and after a period of time I could say that I was reponsible initially for Makita re-introducing the template guides back into their list of accessories (The 16mm guide was not available in the 3612 box for a number of years) and it was on my recommendation that the 40mm guide replaced the previous 16mm.

Triton introduced their router without any mention of Template guides. I contacted Triton and pointed out their error (my opinion) to them at the time. They later did come up with a set of guides from the USA (all Imperial measurement) and the largest diameter was only large enough to get a small finger through. To those who have the Triton Router and the Triton template guide plate holder, you can use the Hitachi Metric guides as they are a suitable fit,and Hitachi produce 40mm guides.

I was not aware that Triton produced a 30mm guide and as to why I consider the 40mm guide a better buy here are the reasons again.
    (1) A greater number of cutters can be used
    (2) The cutter is usually visible during use
    (3) There is less chance of over heating of the cutter
    (4) From a safety factor when using short cutters such as the 1/4" range there is no need to bring the cutter too far out of the chuck to get to the required depth as the chuck will fit through the template Guide

I do have a Triton Router and two Triton Router tables and I have the use of the saw table as well so I am familiar with the Triton set up. Just as a matter of interest have you tried to change the cutter in the Triton Router with a Template guide in Place?

To say that "No one else seems to care whether it is 30 or 40mm as standard". is a great pity even just for the reason #4 I have detailed above.

I have many router users using the 40mm guide as they care for their safety and are able to produce other projects that was not possible before they were introduced to the 40mm guide.

Does it matter where the information comes from as long as it works and just because you do not think the 40mm guide is worth purchasing let the others make up their own mind. All I a trying to do is let people know there are alternative ways of using the router and working with template guides is one just in the same way using the router in the table.

My apologies to all those who may consider this a long winded reply and I am not trying to put anyone down all I am suggesting is an alternative method of using the router

I suppose I do not need to tell others and pass on information Just keep it to myself????????
