    Default Trim router bit

    Team,

I have a 1/4” trim router and am looking for a bit that is smaller in diameter to the bits pictured below. I can’t find any smaller than than the 12.7mm.

    IMG_8043.jpg

I have however found a 9.52mm double bearing tracing bit, but I need to be able to cut into endgrain and not just trim.

Does anyone know of any on the market?

would I be able to sleeve a regular 8mm straight flute so the sleeve sits against a template acting as the bearing. Could this work?

i know where the stresses would be on the router but for the double bearing but don’t understand why they could make it at 9.5 but the one pictured 12.7.

    eager to hear thoughts.

Hey Brian, like wise it’s been a long time., I’ve been around and as things have been flying around if you catch my drift. Slowly making a come back, a bit of turning here a chopping board there, doing everything I can to avoid the mother-in-laws resin cast bowl after its unceremonious dismount. And my daughters walnut and maple jewellery set. She may get it Christmas this year not 2019 as designated. She might appreciate now though as she’s a bit older.

wow, they don’t miss you with those prices, and thank you, I hope you are well also.

Pity you need to plunge cut as there are plenty of these available.

I have several trace router bits with bearing but 2 flute types, and again, 1/4”, the size I need. I also have plenty of flush bits but the perspex/acrylic template won’t handle the shank rubbing against it at 12,000rpm.

my apologies for quoting from the Lee Valley website, but
Amana 1/4" Compression CNC Router Bit - Lee Valley Tools is a 1/4" up and down cut spiral bit which might to what you are looking for.

these bits come in small diameters. Small Straight Bits - Lee Valley Tools

or these Template Bits - Lee Valley Tools

this one is 1/4" diameter with a 1/4" shank and a bottom bearing Laminate Flush Trimming Bits - Lee Valley Tools

    are any suitable?

Just looked in a copy of Carb-i-tool's router bit catalogue
Carb-i-tool do a template bit TGAS 12, 3/8" in diameter (or is it 9.5 mm?), 1/4" shank, top bearing, cutting depth 13mm, overall length 63 mm

    Carb-i-tool also do a
3/8" double spiral (solid Carbide) with a double bearing on the bottom.
1/4" flush trimming bit, bottom bearing,

    .
    so some choices

I am not sure such a beast exists. It is easy to find a slim, flush trim bit with a bottom bearing, but not, as you have found out, with a top bearing. I think it is a manufacturing issue. The top bearing has to slide over the shank, which is either 6mm or ¼" (not the same thing) after the bit has been formed and by the time the bearing is added you have a diameter approaching 12mm.

Like you, I did go looking. I have slim trim bits with the bottom bearing, but all the top bearing bits are 12.7mm or larger.

Ian, thanks but no, I have all of these, but the compression bit might melt the acrylic template as it runs up against it.

Paul, thanks. Yep, 9.5(3/8) is the smallest I have found.

I have an idea but not sure how it will pan out.

    Kevjed, Fumbler,
again apologies for referencing the Lee Valley web site
along with their 1/4" shank, 1/4" dia, 3/4" cutting bit / with a bottom bearing, Lee Valley also make a table in which your trim router could be mounted inverted

    The
    table insert is available separately
table top and stand can be purchased as a unit, or separately as individual components -- top, stand, fence

the top is designed to allow your trim router to be used inverted with a template guide on top of the piece being machined

Would a home made version of this table work for you?
    regards from Alberta, Canada
