    Default Which Trimmer

    Hi All,

I am about to buy a trimmer and not sure which one to gor for, I have narrowed it down to 2! I will be using it for routing out hinges on a daily basis so want something thats up for the job, at the moment I have a Hitachi M8, but like the idea of a smaller trimmer size router.

Makita 3709 and the Makita N3701...

Main difference to what I can see is the following...

3709= Made in China, comes in a case, 530w, approx $250.00

3701= Made in Japan, No case, 440w, approx $270.00

Anyone else have any input on the better model

    Any comments welcomed.

    Thanks

I have an as-new Makita 3701 but the other day I picked up a Festool MFK 700 off eBay which is better (and costs more!).

The Makita 3701 is the better of the Makita trimmers IMO.

I got one of the slightly cheaper plastic-bodied Makita trimmers (3709) a while ago, but its only a few $$ more for the N3701. The 3709 is fine as long as you don't drop it too often !

The N3701 is definitely the pick of the Makita trimmers. I know guys who use these hard in a production environment, and they are pretty bullet-proof.

Of course, if money is no object, the Festool is also a very nice bit of kit . I don't use my trimmer enough to justify the $$$ though.......

Have you considered the Bosch GMR-1? I just picked one up from Carbatec for $249 yesterday. Did a quick test cut and was very happy with it. I liked the Bosch for the corse/fine adjustment. It does not come with a case which was the only issue I have with it.

    Hi All,

Picked up the 3701 today, well pleased so far... Also got the trade tools own brand trimmer, that I will leave set up to do latches ( thought cant go to wrong for less than $100.00 + it comes in a hard case that the 3701 is now living in)

    Thanks for the input guys...

    Gary
