Variable Speed in a Router - What for??
I discovered I have a variable speed router. In what circumstances do you vary the speed of the router?
Thanks
Don

Hi. You vary the speed of the router when using larger diameter bits. A big profile bit for traditional panels can be 3" in diameter, and needs shaft speeds appropriate so that the tip speed is the same as you would get on a smaller bit.
Also, I use end mills designed for metal cutting in my router, and set the rpms lower to prevent burning in those woods that are prone to it. (Myrtle, cherry are two that come to mind immediately)

The rule of thumb is that any bit over the diameter of a 1/2 inch straight bit should be slowed down.
If at first you don't succeed, give something else a go. Life is far too short to waste time trying.

I've bent a 1/2" shaft on a bit(large lock mitre, about 2 1/2" in dia)by starting at full speed accidentally... also near killed the router, it shook off one of the power plugs/lead things on the brushes... burnt and pitted the hell out of the stator contact area(what ever thats called, where the brushes contact?)
Also needed clean jocks!....................................................................
