    Default gmc router

hi everyone this is my first post in the routing forum, and have a question about the gmc 2050 1/2 inch router . I was wondering if it would be suitable for use on redgum I know this is a general type of question but have never owned and only used a router a few times. I have been looking to buy one for some time now but always seem to get out bid the gmc is a price I can afford, but not if it won,t be suitable. Any information would be greatly appriecated.

what will you be doing in the red gum?

any router can do an timber just has to take smaller cuts at a time.

i have both the 1200w and 2500w? gmc routers and they are great and can beat anything i throw at them.

    Hi Freaky,
It depends on how much routing you intend to do.
If you just want to shape a couple of table edges or a few trenches then it should be fine. IMO If you want to do a fair bit more then don't bother with the GMC. Especially in a very hard wood like redgum.
I have a few GMC tools. They are all in the box of things i will pull apart one day and use the motor or the chuck or some bits in a jig. I used to think they were ok for a cheap one off job and then throw them out if they didn't perform. But now i just think it is false economy. Save for a while and buy something decent that will last. All just my opinion. Others may disagree.

yep your right mate, I disagree. I have used and owned GMC tools for 8 years and the only ones I have ever broken are the ones I knew I would....because I pushed them so hard I knew they would, incidentally so would have any other brand.
GMC are great because they allow "bums" like me to get into woodworking and power tools because they are cheap! You start off with a cheap GMC wood lathe for $100. Once you are confident enough and have developed your skills a little more you upgrade to something that suits you more. GMC over the years have brought products in at price points that havent been seen before and have allowed end users to have a crack at a particular tool without forking out $100's of dollars and then discovering they dont actually enjoy using the tool as much as they had imagined they would.
    Just my opinion as well.

    cheers,

Get the GMC router and stock up on bits from Saw & Bits, would be getting the router bits quick though as the stocks are running out. I have made a few purchases and love them. Got paid yesterday so might go shopping again
It's only a mistake if you don't learn from it.

    cheers,

As a hobbyist, I could not agree more. As much maligned GMC and Ozito have been by the so called experts I could not be happier with them. Ok. I have had the odd bummer, but overall I am way in front with them.

I had paid nearly $500 for a Makita cordless drill and while it is more perfectly balanced in the hand then the cheapies it eventually crashed and on a pro rata basis for most tools where accuracy is not that paramount I will go for the cheapie.

Thank you all very much for the quick informative replies. At this stage I won,t be using the router a lot, have managed to build a alaskan type mill for my chainsaw and have cut some nice bits of red gum that I intend using in the garden and for some outdoor furniture and maybe a slab with our property name on it, but think it would be handy to keep for future projects(maybe I am just dreaming) .
