New to woodworking, wanting to start with a Router Table
Hi Guys and Girls,
50yo, new to woodworking. Have all the usually tools in the shed, drills, jigjaws, mitre saw etc....
I want to buy a router table and router (to suit), to start doing rebates (rabbeting) joins etc.....
The big shops like Sydney tools don't seem to have router tables, where do I go?
I guess there are two types of setups, adjustment height on the table and adjustment height on the router (plunge)
Any help would be great
Jay

You may wish to learn about and possibly consider, this type of router.
https://www.timbecon.com.au/routing/router-tables-accessories/round-body-router-motor
Click on the link in the bottom left corner of the page, this goes to a video clip that explains in more detail why this type of router, is often a preferred choice for a tabletop router.
Their router table can be bought in a very basic; you mount onto a stand or bench type, or you can go upwards through their various models until you get to their top of the tree with bells on model.
I would suggest you may be best picking up a reasonably cheap router secondhand to understand how routers work and how they feel. Invariably this will be a plunge router, which is fine, but for tabletop use, the router in the link would be my preference if money was available.
You could marry your cheap router with a secondhand Triton router table, or build your own router table with stuff you either find on nature strips, or reasonably cheaply bought materials.

Jay,
Strongly recommend you look at the websites of Timbecon and Carbatec. Between them you should see a lot of different features which will help you narrow down your must-haves and nice-but-not-essential items.
Don’t be sucked in by glitz. The most important thing is that your table is flat, whether it is steel, MDF or anything else. Remember you’ll have a heavy router hanging under it so stiffness is very important. You can have an all singing fence like the Incra LS system but for most people that is unnecessary. I know two renowned international woodworkers who both use a piece of 25mm MDF as a fence, held in place by G clamps. One also uses a scissor jack from an old car as a router lift. I’m not saying the upmarket gear isn’t good, just that it’s worth waiting until you see what you actually use it all for.
Good hunting!

Welcome to the forum Jay Just remember that routing with router in the table mode will limit the number of processes that can be done also the variety of projects that can be achieved. It has been quoted "90% of all routing processes can be achieved with the router in the table mode" this may have been the case some years ago but since I found another method of using the router with the aid of template guides I have able to produce a greater number of projects that are not capable of being produced in the table mode or NOT SAFE to be achieved in the table. So I am prepared to say that 10% of ALL routing processes CAN Be achieved in the table mode and 90% are only possible with aid of the Template guides. Check my you tube videos to see a great number of routing processes that can be processed WITH GREATER SAFETY AWARENESS . As a "newbie" to routing search the web for safer processes with the router.
