There are a few different sorts of '1 hp' dust suckers, generally depending on if they are powered by a brush type motor or a universal motor - the universal motors are slightly more expensive, heavier and a LOT quieter - which may make a difference depending on how close the neighbours are, and if they put batteries in their hearing aids.

I'd suggest shoving the little sucker outside and running the pipe inside to where ever you want to get rid of dust & shavings - the bags on these machines are not too flash & will attempt to evenly spread any dust collected back over the shop if left inside. As most of them have castors it is not too hard to shove them outside, then let them back in - like the family dog when there is a big dinner on

They can be used as a floor sweep or connected to a single power tool using flexible tube, and several on-line suppliers have specialised fittings that make it easy to connect & reconnect various tools. Rockler (US) have a very complete range of fittings for 4" flex tube, and Lee Valley (Canada) & Carbatec (Oz) also have taper fittings that allow you to just jam them over standard 4" dust ports on machines.

If you only want to use 1 at a time, you just need one length of flex tube, 2 hose clamps & one taper fitting, then just swap around, no need for blast gates or a mile of plumbing fittings.
