150mm Blast Gates
I have just done a Google for 150mm blast gates, rung CT and a few others and 150mm BG's seem to be a bit thin on the ground. I either need a good design or a source of them here in Oz. Suggestions or designs much appreciated.

Chris, this thread has both a drawing and photos of how to make 150mm blast gates from scratch.

Thanks Fred, I like the idea of pulling it right through, be damned if I am goiing to make it in gal sheet though. I will try it in tempered masonite and see what happens. Off to the shed to knock one up.

I looked at that one Mike and the two are very similar except the metal one slides right through and a stop can be put on it at either end. I am going to put these in the main line above my head instead of at each machine as each 150mm line goes into a 2x100 out transition so it is simpler just to gate the main line. I will spring load the gates closed and have a hanging cord and pull them open against the spring and the stops will position them. I did think of pneumatic small cylinders but then the air compressor has to be turned on and that is just silly for this task plus having to put all the controls in.

Ross, thanks for the link. I will try my home made one first and see how it goes. One thing I have against a lot of them is they are blind at one end supposedly collect dust in the blind end. Has anyone any comment on this?

Cut the corners off the blind end, about 5mm from memory.

Hi Mini, I made a few 120mm blast gates,
Attachment 134517
not a good pic, but basically it's 2 bits of chipboard with holes cutout to suit the short flanged pipe, (rolled sheet metal) these were glued in with some araldite, masonite for the slide (no hole design) easy to remove, just pulls all the way out, fitted with a threaded insert and 6mm bolt for a slide stop/positioner, some silky oak for spacers around 3 edges, these where about 0.2mm thicker than the masonite and four 6mm blots thru with nuts to hold it all together, I bolted it like this just in case I have to pull it apart (blocked up/jammed/a complete failure??) but so far no dramas works well I had one get a bit stiff, just took a smidge off the width of the masonite.
On the question of the blind end and blocking so far so good I have more trouble with the sheetmetal factory built ones with this regard, I do think a better design would be a slide of the hole/no hole design, no possibility of blocking in the dead end and when open the slide fills the space in between the 2 halves, in my design when I slide out the slide there is a gap which could fill up(if low flow) and it will cause a bit of extra turbulence
The little bucket jammed in the closest inlet works pretty well also
Hope this helps

I can't understand the gates that are blind ended. I notice Clearvue actually have leak points in their version to overcome this problem. Maybe some dill thought if they had both ends open they would leak but that is clearly impossible when the slide is pulled against the gate body by atmospheric pressure when the duct goes under AP in operation. I have just about got the first prototype made and it looks good, I had a few bits of tempered masonite left over so that got used. I need to scare up a few springs to close it and Bob will be a happy uncle, whether it works as intended is yet to be seen.
