    Default 150mm metal gates

Had a quick look around and could not find any recent comments on this topic. About to fit the workshop out with a permanent dust extraction system. Looking for a source of 150mm blast gates that will work with PVC. GPW have them on their site, but at $12 each I think these will be plastic. Lee Valley say theirs are for metal ducting and Clearvue want $34 each. Looking for something a little lower in cost if possible.

    $34 is actually quite reasonable.
I need 8 gates so made my own using 150 mm female PVC couplings ($10 each) and 3 mm PVC sheet but they take a good 2 hours each to make so as usual 'm working for $5/hour.

    Default 150mm metal gates

Ditto from me. I made 7 x 6" gates recently. I used aluminium as the slides, which worked out well.

I still have the plans. Let me know if you would like them (they were free, so no copyright).

I'm looking at replacing my slides from PVC which is now starting to bind, to Al.

I used 2mm which seems to be thick enough.

Default Home Made 6" Blast Gate Plans

Here are 2 pages from American Woodworker June/July 2010 that I used to make my blast gates. The only difference is that I used MDF for this sides instead of Laminate, and I used 2mm Aluminium for the slides instead of Laminate.

If you have trouble opening these 2 pages send me a PM with your email address and I'll email them to you instead.

Two things that can improve the American wood working gate are

    1) The hole in the slide should match the ID of the duct.
If it matches the ID of the gate/duct couplers there will be an step transition inside the gate which will cause turbulence and reduce flow.

    2) The slide should be made so that it can be easily removed.
This is needed because sometimes dust can setting in gaps and jam the slides.
I did this by gluing the handle on one side and attaching the handle on the other side with screws.

I also prefer not to glue the two sides of the gate together but use small bolts and seal the gaps with silicone
This is just mean wanting to be able to take things completely apart in case they get blocked.

The WIP for my gates are shown here.

The pics show them being made on a metal working lathe and metal working mill (That was at work) but I made most of them at home with a router.

    Bob,

if you are in Laurieton NSW.........

I am just around the corner (Bonny Hills) and even travel to Laurieton twice in most weeks. Perhaps more importantly I have 2 x 150mm blast gates that are just sitting in a box. I ordered a bunch when I bought my CV dust extractor and can't see myself using these 2 in any foreseeable future. If you are interested, let me know. Of course if you would like to see my dust extractor setup that could also be arranged.

    cheers

    Mick

If you want metal you should definately make your own. The Eziduct ones are $115 plus GST which is why I don't stock them
