Default Is it just me or is this actually counter-productive

As I see it, one of the challenges in setting up effective dust extraction on a tablesaw is opening up enough airflow into the cabinet to ensure that there is sufficient airflow getting in to carry the dust away.

I see this product as being a step backwards for airflow through the cabinet, but for only $10 you can turn your tablesaw into a billboard for Microjig.

I like and use a lot of Microjig products, but I think I will give this one a miss.

I got sick of sitting around doing nothing - so I took up meditation.

    Hey Doug,

It makes sense in theory. The extractor is pulling air through the cabinet, you want as much of that air to come from the space around the blade. So sealing up other hole means a higher volume of air coming from around the blade.

Although the thing to look at is practically how much of a difference will it make. For instance if you have large holes like a exposed bottom, it will probably make little difference.

BobL will be along here to comment properly, but as Dimithri says this in theory works, but the practicality of it is that there needs to be an appropriate inflow so there's no restriction imposed on the DC doing it's job and it can keep the maximum amount of air flowing thru the cabinet. So they only address half the issue, as there needs to be appropriate breathing holes away from the DC connection port to maximise collection capability

The fella on that vid has little clue on many levels about what is going on. For a start, you can safely ignore anyone still using 100 mm ducting on their cabinet and I'll bet he's never made a single accurate air flow measurement around a table saw. BTW unless it is completely removed it is IMPOSSIBLE to get enough air flow through the throat plate to counteract the dust dragged up above the table by the rotating blade.

I think it's unfortunate when a company that offers truly innovative products trades on their good name to sell junk, and worse, intentionally uses hyperbolic language (how many workshop fires have you had because you didn't have their magnetic thing fitted) go give it legitimacy. The reality is that for those that know better, it just makes us sceptical of them as a brand, which like I said, is unfortunate.

It made me think of this this one from Lie Neilsen, with why their tapered dovetail saw is better (start at the 3:40 mark). Whilst the product is still good, the marketing message is just ridiculous. Had it been published 14 days earlier it would have made sense.

What happened 2 weeks earlier to make this sensible???

(BTW - I don't agree with this marketing hype from LN - either learn to "feel" parallel, or just drop your hand a smidge!)
