Beginner with no space, filtering outside...
Hi,
Today I decided that I:
- Don't really have space for filtering to happen in the workshop
- Don't want a cyclone (see 1.)
- I want to keep my 2HP generic blower close to my table saw
- At 18sqm I don't even have a lot of space for lots of large diameter ducting
So now I'm thinking blower next to table saw and large ducting to a new small outdoor filtering station, so the questions is really, what filter to put out there and also if anyone has any tips?
Thanks.
Richard

How much space do you have outside?
Why do you want to keep the "blower" close to the table saw?
The motor/impella take up little room compared to filters and dust bag. Usually just put the whole thing outside, rather than separating the impella/motor and the filtering / collection bag.

1) DC close to TS and then X meters of ducting to a filtering setup outside
Will be no different in terms of airflow (or dust extraction) to
2) DC plus filter outside separated by X m of ducting to TS inside.
The downside of 1) is the space consumed by the DC inside the shed plus the extra noise .

Thanks.
More than enough space.
Because the TS is in the centre of the room and the blower can go under it or under the bench beside it (its the power tool I use most).
I'm "right behind the neighbours living room" noise (my workshop has gyprock, insulation and cement sheet walls to keep the noise down) and powering the blower and switching it on/off remotely are some issues. Weatherproofing the "outhouse" would also be less of a concern (it there was only a filter in there and no AC power)
I could probably use square ducting from the centre of the room to the outhouse.
Filter recommendations, anyone?

If you are blowing the air outside, then choose a filter that will capture the dust, but give you as much air flow as possible, like 30 micron bags. There's no reason to filter the air you are blowing outside well.
Don't forget about ventilating your shop. Getting a cross breeze going in your shop really helps the air quality and takes practically no space.
You mentioned that space for ducts is a problem. I put a 6" duct on the floor of my shop that I have to step over sometimes and I don't hate nearly as much as I thought I would. I used some flex to allow me to move it out the way when necessary.

You aren't returning the air so the filters only need to get the bigger stuff. I would use 30 micron filter bags. You could go to 5 micron if the price was the same but only needed if the wind is going to blow into the neighbours living room and they have allergies. BobL can correct me but I'm pretty sure he only has the cloth bags.

Ok, so 5 micron bags, how is the housing "perforated" to allow large escaped stuff to fall down but avoid back-pressure while simultaneously stopping things getting wet in the rain?
So, now I'm thinking 180x100mm(WH internal) plywood floor duct going from the table saw to the blower and then the blower exhausts to a housing on the outside?
I can't really get my head around the best way to "interface" with the blower, I want to mod the blower for better cfm while still allowing:
- Whatever the table saw output ends up looking like
- 2 x 100mm bandsaw ports
- 100mm router port
- 100mm CNC port
- 100mm thicknesser port
How do I allow for "movement" of the saw and blower (in relation to the floor duct), change the rectangular duct to 150mm flex at either "end"?
Only one tool ever being used at any one time, so blast gates and all that.
Where on earth do I find all these large ports, ducting and filter medium?
I'll probably just end up making the outdoor housing with ply?
Apologies, I'm sure all of this has been asked before but this sub-forum is pretty huge now and the search function isn't the best.

It has a double S shaped baffled exit - look in the sticky on the dust forum.
Diagram number 3 in this post.

I'm sure all of this has been asked before but this sub-forum is pretty huge now and the search function isn't the best.
Sounds like you need to read thru all of the stickies in this forum?

My shop is about 9' wide. The ducts are on one side and the bandsaw is on the other side. This is with the duct attached to the bandsaw.

This is from the opposite direction, showing the actual connection to the bandsaw and the path that the duct blocks.

This is with the duct out of the way so I can shuffle through the walkway.

It's more flex than I would like, but dust collection is a long series of compromises. In the end you just have to do the best you can.
I have a ClearVue with a 16" impeller and only get about 539 CFM of real airflow with this setup. (Although I haven't yet cut the crosses out of the bandsaw connections.) You can read about other airflow measurements I made here: ClearVue CV1700 install The whole thread has more pictures.
