    Default Bell Mouth in PVC

How to make a bell mouth on the end of a PVC pipe

I got distracted while looking for something else.

Looks useful Chris. I wonder if I could get enough heat into a 150 mm pipe to do this....

John Samuel uses heated oil to form his fittings but a good hot air gun should do it I would think.

He isn't building a bell mouth for air flow.

Thanks for your comments Bob, I am sorry I posted it now. Why can't you just accept I posted it to show the method, not that it was mathematically perfect in every way. Unsubscribed.

Perhaps because the thread title suggests that the video is a demonstration of how to make a bell mouth and someone searching for help on how to make a bell mouth will likely find this thread, and may not read any others. He would then potentially end up with an bell mouth that creates turbulence and spits out chips and dust instead of taking them away.

My first reaction on watching the video was that the profile was wrong. I was considering my reply pointing that out when I scrolled down and saw that Bob had mentioned it.

If you have a lathe you could spin something up pretty easily or even a nice big roundover bit used on MDF as a lot of the SPL guys seem to run.

This is what I thought was the more usual way, the Aussie car audio forum is gone, there was some good info on that site.

I'd prefer to hear what you have to say Bobl. Just ignore the few people who are maybe a little too sensitive.

I've actually been wondering about bell mouth hoods for when my lathe is finished, can't for the life of me find 150mm ones in Australia. Am I blind?

That's probably why it seems most people build their own - too difficult to locate one to buy.
I also made my own. By the time I locate one to buy then drive to get it I probably could have made a dozen myself and for almost no cost.

Thought that might be the case! How did you wind up making yours?

To suit a 150mm pipe I cut two pieces of 17mm thick ply (about 250mmx250mm). Using the jig saw I then cut a circular hole in each piece: one circle equal in diameter to the internal diameter of the 150mm pipe, one circle equal in diameter to the outside diameter of the pipe and glued them together. Then using my biggest round over bit on the router, routed the curved edge on the inside of the smaller of the two cutouts, cleaned up with some hand sanding and finished off with a good coat of paving paint. The pipe slips into and gets glued and screwed into the larger circular cutout ready for use as an inlet into my dust collector as in this thread.... 2 HP dust collector upgrade
