Thread: Bell mouth from wood for drill press

Got plans for big work (sanding?) with the DP?

I run stones and sanding drums in my little DP for cutting and shaping abalone shell and slate as inlay for wood carvings. Cut the bottom out of a 2l plastic milk jug, cut some splines in the neck and put it on the end of my ShopVac hose.
The rotation direction of the sanding drum throws the crud straight into my pick-up. I'm cutting within 5cm of the opening so there isn't a bit of dust (plaster fines bag in the SV).

Not very fancy but I liked the price for the effectiveness.
Maybe ths gives you some ideas?

Post 89 in the thread provides some detail about how I made mine

To cut a long story short a reasonably efficient hood can be obtained when the radius of curvature of the bell mouth is half the radius of the ducting.

I marked out a 1/4 circle 3" radius of curve on a piece of card and turned it to that profile.

In that thread I called that Bell Mouth Hood a mock up or test hood, but after testing it with the dust counter and finding it was so effective in controlling fine dust from the lathe I just painted it and it has become my regular hood.

Hi Robson valley. Yes I do a fair bit of sanding of curved work on the drill press with a drum because i don't have a spindle sander.
