Is bigger better
I have a generic 2 hp dust extractor which works well enough for my needs but I am in the process of upgrading the ducting to something that doesn't look like I threw it together in 20 minutes with whatever I had at hand, which is exactly what I did. A while back I gave away using plastic collection bags and replaced them with a plastic 200 litre drum which works well but has a few drawbacks, ie you can't see how full it is and it is a lot harder to empty than you might imagine. So it is time to utilise some of the stupid things I collect. IMG_0202.jpg
Its fibreglass, 1500 dia and came out of a sewerage treatment plant. My plan is to cut a hole in the top and mount the cyclone thingy and filter bag on it then cut out a 600 wide by 800 high section about where those holes are, frame it up and add a removable hatch. The thing on the ground is a 1600 square of 6mm aluminium checkerplate, so that will be the base. It will be under a carport at the back of the shed where the tractor parks which means the loader bucket is right there. With a large snow shovel emptying it shouldn't be a problem, although if I let it fill to the top, 2 cubic metres may be a bit daunting. Now before I go to the trouble of building this, my question is, will it work? or will the large size disrupt how the cyclone does what it does?

My aim with disposal is to keep the dust as undisturbed as possible and using a shovel will mean disturbing the dust and having to wear PPE to prevent breathing it. I use those big blue plastic drums, pull it out and put a lid on it and it stays sealed until the drum is emptied. As for the size of the container it should not in theory be a problem as long as it is air tight.

The size of the drum is largely irrelevant in terms of overall dust collection. Of greater significance is the Standard 2HP DCs are underspecced for wood dust collection AND using ANY cyclone on a 2HP DC will further reduce its flow so it is not going to be very effective at collecting fine dust.
