building a thiens dust separator
I have a 2hp carbatec dusty and i am going to mount the motor and impellor on to a thiens separator and do away with the filter bag and vent the dust outside shed. Just not sure what size to make the separator for the drum 18 " or 22" Dia. , Bill Pentz site said smaller Dia. finer separation but more resistance to motor , larger Dia. less separation less load on motor, this was for cyclones with cone .I want the most cfm I can get out of this system Anythoughts anyone

Does separation matter?
If you're venting outside does the dust separation capacity matter?
I'm thinking along the same lines as you, mounting a blower directly to the separator and venting the finer dust outside.Annular Grooved Nails....Ribbed for the Woods Pleasure?

Hi Garethr
I think if you go with the larger Dia. you will have some coarse dust dropping on the ground where venting which would be unexceptable to SWMBO so have decided to make with 18 " dia. Hopeful this will trap most dust and fine stuff should disapate into air.

you could try using the existing equipment - if you want finer dust separation, you need a small radius - the downside is you need more power to pull air through it. If the existing ring size works well enough, you could keep it or manufacture a complete new separator of the same size, otherwise try something different. Bigger diameter will mean more pull through, but you'll get more vented particulates.
works fine for mine (also vented outside).
