    Default Check out this guy.

While I see faults in his design namely size of pipe, I am fasinated by his attention to detail. Not a blowhard Americano either.

I sent an email to him with a couple suggestions I have learnt.
He was very appreciative, part of his reply Basically, what I'm making is not the best of fluid dynamics, nor the best of engineering. I am an inventor.

Jees' mate - if you feel the need to correct every dust collection mistake on UT you'll be dead well before you finish.

What changes would you recommend? I really like his design and am thinking about making a version for both my table saws (one rip and other crosscut).

    Regards,
    Raymond.

the biggest challenge is the size of clear vertical.pipe, he started at 100, folded and shaped it down to ... guess 85mm then that puce sat inside the blade guard, creating a hindrance to air flow up the pipe.

the second thing was if he positioned the pipe at the front of blade guard he would suck even more dust away.

geez I've learnt something I hope.
He was very grateful if my comments, but did mention he was a design engineer.

Adding to what Tonyz said (my thoughts too) and detailed in BobL's threads and posts about his. Somewhere in the second video the gent used a 67mm or so hose inside the column and big box tied to the ceiling. That hose restricted the air flow even more. It shows in the dust we can see thrown on the table when demonstrating how it was working. Bob's overhead guard shows much less if any. You could still take many of the styling cues from the gent's overhead to pretty up Bob's if you like as long as you don't restrict the hose or duct to less than the 100mm.

    We both learned Tony.

    Default BobL is Silent

On dust control, silence from BobL is golden - and very expressive.

When I saw the video my initial reaction was WOW - I'd like a clear dust extractor - then I started having doubts. Why now? Why not 20 years ago? Why?

Then a series of nagging doubts arose:
    • Will there be adequate airflow through that hood and piping?
    • Will the saw dust abraid the interior surface - frosting?
    • Why haven't the big boys injection molded something similar,
    • All those screws - why not chemically weld joints with dichloromethane?

Perhaps I will revisit the idea when someone else prefects it and earns Bob's stamp of approval.

Making such a thing using parts and screws makes some sense especially if the guard is accidentally drop onto the spinning blade. It may then be possible to just replace the piece that was cut?

Price clear pipe and then you can work out why it is not used. Been there etc!

    As always.

Perhaps I read too much into your silence on the transparent hood as implying that its effectiveness was likely to be extremely low. So why bother?

Can you send the link to BobL dust guard for table saw, as mentioned in this thread a few times. I can’t seem to find in the search bar. Thanks

I'm digging and eventually will find it. Along the way I have found other similar ones and will list them too.

@BobL #245 #82 86 There may be more but these will give you the idea.
